Are these discs oem?
Are these discs oem?
I've took my brakes apart to try and find out why they've scored. The pads are trw(has anyone heard of these?) and I know they were replaced at the same time as the discs so I'm wondering if they're aftermarket also? I can't see any markings suggesting that they are Audi on them. Cheers in advance
Re: Are these discs oem?
They look OEM to me. Same hole pattern - that's all I'm going on. Mine used to get grooves in them as well when they'd done a lot of miles. I don't think that's a worry. You should probably measure the disc thickness though, see if they need replacing.

TRW are one of those companies that make OEM stuff for VW/audi.
I don't think the discs have any VW/Audi markings on them, certainly not on the front, but not had mine off to look behind.
Mine have worn the same as yours, just running them till pads wear out and replace both

Re: Are these discs oem?
Europarts seemed to be the main online supplier for TRW pads when I was looking at discs and pads a few months ago and is likely that pads have been purchased from them. If the discs where also bought from them at the same time then the good news is that the discs are OEM, euro parts have discounts on them every few months and they suddenly become significantly cheaper than the the main dealers with a rush from forum members to purchase. (There are several threads on this if you search on Europarts)
The not so good news is that the TRW pads, whilst are OEM for Audi/VW on some models do not seem to be a comparable spec with the Audi supplied RS4 pads or equivalent alternatives that other forum members have recommended.
I ended up having the discs skimmed and going for the dealer supplied pads.

Re: Are these discs oem?
Audi discs have the 4 ring stamp, part number and min thickness stamped onto the outer face leading edge where the air feeds into the vanes.
Audi pads are made by Pagid to their own spec and that same specification is not available from directly from Pagid themselves or via a third party. TRW are not an RS4 OEM product, they don't perform as well and have ruined your discs by the look of it. General forum opinion for a good pad are genuine Audi items or Ferodo Premier as recommended by MRC.

Re: Are these discs oem?
Thanks guys. Just off for a vernier to check the size of the discs. The pads are due replacement anyway as there's only 3-4mm left on them. I can't imagine they are oem as they have no pad sensors on them.

If your vernier gauge is unable to get the correct thickness due to the lip, then you could put a couple of coins onto the disc faces and gain a measurement that includes them. Once done measure the coins to subtract that figure from the total measurement to get the actual disc thickness.

Re: Are these discs oem?
Good tip, thanks. Theyre Audi OEM and are 33.6 mm so plenty of life left in them despite the amount of rust........as long as the cracks dont get any worse. Time to hide the iron X!!Surrey Sam wrote:If your vernier gauge is unable to get the correct thickness due to the lip, then you could put a couple of coins onto the disc faces and gain a measurement that includes them. As an aside, them retaining pins for the pads are a bugger!!
Re: Are these discs oem?
Ah good stuff.
There's a trick to those pins, I tapped them from the front to get them started, then used a decent pair of grips to hold them from the back of the caliper and gently tap the grips with the hammer and it tugs them out with no drama
By the way, just looking at your pic. You have the same 8 pot calipers as me but mine have a bar going across the bottom, you can see where it would bolt on in your pic. Anybody know if it's ok to remove? It would make it a lot easier to clean.

Thats pretty much how I did the top one. The lower one just will not start though. Ive been out and bought some punch pins today as it was starting to become a mess, hopefully they'll get it started. Theres not enough showing out the back to get the moleys on otherwise.SuprSi wrote:Ah good stuff.

Re: Are these discs oem?
Damn, that's a pain, hope the punches do the trick. Might be worth trying to get some wd40 in it to help free it up.

I gave em a few blasts with some wd40 anti seize stuff as well. Fingers crossed
Re: Are these discs oem?
This is the main brace bar between the 2 calliper bodies and I'm hoping gt2 has temporarily removed this in an effort to get the pads out which is why it isn't in the picture?...SuprSi wrote:Ah good stuff.
