De-coke???

Post by theboyleach » Sun Jul 13, 2014 5:56 pm

Does it really make a difference?
My car has just turned 49000, just wondering if it would make a noticeable difference?

Cheers

Do the 3000-8000rpm test, if you still do a time that's within the factory spec (somewhere in the high 8 second area) then you'll be making close to factory power so it won't make much difference.

Do the 3000-8000rpm test.
Sounds interesting. How exactly do i do this test? I take its best to use the lap-timer built in the fis?

A very good test - lots of good information here.

You had other issues though, a decoke won't make that much difference.

and didn't someone check their engine a year after having a decoke and found it was all coked up again? Unless you are going to have it done every year or managed to find a way to prevent / slow it down then it seems a little pointless to me.

+1, feck that. I'm going the preventative route and giving my engine a good workout every time the oil's up to temp. I'm currently averaging 17-point-something lifetime miles per gallon and that's not from sitting in traffic. It's been a while since I've done the 3-8000 test but I'm fairly confident I'm not missing any horses.

Did it today a few times! I actually landed between 8.5 - 8.8 everytime. Was actually abit worried it was time for a decoke on mine. But everything is in shape! :beerchug: :blackrs4:

It makes a difference for sure. If your valves don't close due to carbon build up then you loose compression and hence power. I went from 398ps to 442ps post a Terraclean, MRC carbon clean and custom remap by Doug. I had no other issues with the car before and after, this was with standard cats a non res Milltek and everything else as stock. The car does over 193mph on the clock.
RS4 B7, Mugello Blue, K&W V3 & HR ARBs, set up by Centre Gravity, Milltek Valved Non Res & cat bypass pipes, BMC air filter, braided hoses, DOT 5.1, Terraclean, MRC Full Carbon Clean, MRC remap 448PS 477NM, 20" S7 alloys with 4mm spacers & Hawke spigots 66.6 > 57.1, AP Racing front discs. Sold Sept 2019. Now rocking an F80 M3

About to buy a 2007 B7 with less than 21k miles and I'm a bit concerned about this carbon build up/decoking issue.

I get the impression the previous owner looked after/pampered this car (hence the low mileage) and hasn't driven/revved it hard enough to prevent carbon build up.

I'll get MRC to do a health check.

My question is on a car with so few miles is it unlikely to be an issue?

Many thanks,
CycleSi

I had a car with similar mileage and had no problems at all. Like you say though, it's more to do with how it's been driven rather than the mileage. An MRC health check ( and a regular "Italian tune") sounds like a great idea and if you get anywhere near 390 bhp, its a good 'un.

Thanks for that.

As I say, I'll get MRC to check it out and hope it's in fine form before thinking about a Stage 2 remap.
