Put my car into the Audi body Shop to have the paint inspected for "zinc" as they called it.
left the car with them that day for a few hours they only took a few photos to send for goodwill to Audi as it common on arches and roof so the car didn't move.
as we have the Audi contract for Audi moving there cars about from branch to branch i managed to drop a car off at the body Shop and could just put mine on the empty truck (doesn't normally link up as well as that lol)
car drove on as new (as always) got back to the yard few miles away...wouldn't start on the truck...rolled it off...started but with the worst miss firer ever thinking possibly dodgy air mass or fuel or something simple switched it off and started few times and the same every time...the last time tried to start it nothing....took it to Audi next morning...ENGINE SEIZED
took the engine out.
turns out the chain guides broke up and snapped the chain and the small bits of metal has went through the engine
£13k just for a replacement engine and plus labor of old one out and new one in plus clutch since its out
as full service history and as also do work for them manged to get 70% goodwill

also the 1st engine out of all their Audi group to have to do an engine on one as fully destroyed (that should be goodwill itself )

brand new engines ordered so hopefully be here buy the weekend from the factory or early next week

it was high roughly 97/98
but not to gutted as it should be brand new again...(I wonder if i will still get my good will on the paint job to ) might be pushing that tho

no because its been on it a few times along with most other rs models and r8s and the all seem to be fine just unlucky that it happened i suppose
and it couldn't cause metal parts inside the engine to brake up i doubt

Be interesting to see photos of the damage.
I can't see how the timing chains would put a hole in the engine.
Sure, would cause pistons to bend valves but not terminal.

My thoughts are something else broke in the engine causing something to sieze. This prevented on aspect of the timing chain to move but crank still turning causing them to fail.

Still a very unusual failure. I would guess that the goodwill is also there to take ownership of the failed engine back for analysis. If you paid for everything they'd not be able to find out what happened internally (as it's still your engine after all!)

Wow, as adsgreen said must have been something else in turn that contributed to the seizure.

Mine had a full engine replacement at 16,000 miles due to a cylinder bore defect. I always wondered what the going rate was for a replacement engine as the invoice I have is blank (covered under warranty).

it didnt put a hole in the engine tho.
it smashed the spark plugs and the valves were sitting on the pistons im sure they said (not them all)
they had to remove the engine and open it up to find the cause. as Audi UK wanted to know first.
yep would have been its still in Glasgow just now alotho i am also in there everyday (not normally with my own car tho lol)
its just a like for like engine im sure 13k they said at cost from the factory plus fitting and old 1 out

Ok so no hole in the engine.

But A new engine for broken valves?
Grante I've no experience of the BNS engine but bent plenty of valves when messeing on the bench. Also te Elise Toyota unit known to be unforgiving if you miss-shift and I've never seen any piston damage.
Depending on your budget you could look at two new cylinder heads which would be much cheaper.

I do not think Audi would go that route replacing heads for fear of something happening to the bottom half going forward. ie not knowing what loading, stresses and strains components had been under

And they would not be able to justify the work needed to prove all was ok to use, so they would just say the engine needs changing

I bet you would love to get hold of that engine Ads?

Sill nice to have a new lump and sort any issues whilst its out, nice car to keep going forward
