When i use the i pod connection that was already fitted to my car it disables the phone capability (hands free) is it possible to change the lead for a fully functional one that will charge/play i tunes/work hands free

RE: i pod connection
Are you saying you have an iPhone connected using the Audi iPod adapter?

I may be wrong here, and I think petrol dave is probably going down the same trail of thought as I am......
If it is an I phone and you connected using the lead, the iphone will display 'Accessory connected' and detail the accessory at the bottom of the screen. You need to select the detail at the bottom of the screen and change it to 'doicking device'.
They should then both work...
This is what was wrong with mine, but then again I have a different head unit so I could be completely wrong....

RE: i pod connection
Ahh sorry didnt explain very well, the i pod connection is an aftermarket lead that i presume is somehow plugged into the port were the auto changer should plug into (it no longer works) ive bought a brodit holder as i wasnt aware audi did one for the car,im wondering if i can get an i phone lead rather than i pod and gain all functions from one lead,it comes up currently as an accessory stating it doesnt support the phone or charging but no options to change it???? Please dont tell me audi do a proper holder ive bought in car chargers and allsorts!!!!!!!

RE: i pod connection
There is NO "proper" lead for iPods or iPhones (i.e. one that will display track info on the RNS-E), but there is a Dension adapter (that will replace the one you have in the CD changer port) and will get the CD changer working again AND show track info from the iPod on the DIS.
You need to check whether it will charge the iPhone - Apple deleted on of the two charging methods on recent iPods and iPhones which is why many adapters don't charge them.
If you have a BT phone adapter then the iPhone WILL connect to that at the same time so you can listen to your music from the iPhone AND use it with hands-free at the same time. That's just a question of setup and pairing.
I can't help any more since I don't have an iPod or iPhone - the minimum monthly fee that Vodafone want for an iPhone is twice what I'm currently paying so they can go whistle!

I have just got an ipod nano and was wondering how the hell I can run it through the car. It doesn't have a lead in the glovebox (as some do) - my car has the "standard" RS4 system with a 6 autochanger in the glovebox. Any advice welcome...please keep it simple though - I can build most things, but computer chips just confuse me.

You have 2 choices:
1) replace the CD changer with the Audi iPod interface.
2) add a Dension Gateway 400 http://densionice.co.uk/DensionGateway400.aspx which will allow you to keep your CD changer and connect your ipod as well.
With neither of these will you get track names on the RNS-E.

Not sure this info will help but on the basis it might...
I'm running a Nano on the factory Ipod socket with the Dension interface Dave mentioned before and works like a dream - I think the factory ipod and glovebox units are interchangeable if desired - sure it won't be cheap though!
The factory phone cradle on the centre console cradle I was going to rip out (and bought anew console for!) actually works really well with the iphone 3GS - charging properly once you buy the updated audi holder for the phone - gives you 'car-related' apps and live tv on the console

Re: i pod connection
I purchased the OEM iPod adapter. I tried fitting it to my RNS-E but I wasn't sure what to do with the two brown wires in the wire bundle. I'm looking for some guidance as the instructions were not very helpful.

Wire colours are not a good guide to their function as they get changed, knowing which pins they are attached to is the important thing. Can you trace them back?CaptainLF wrote:I purchased the OEM iPod adapter. I tried fitting it to my RNS-E but I wasn't sure what to do with the two brown wires in the wire bundle. Hi Dave,
I have attached the pictures. The wire harness is wrapped so I'm not sure if I can answer your pin question. LMK if the pictures help or if you need more info.
Thanks

Re: i pod connection
Really difficult to tell from those pictures, but one of them appears to show them being plugged together?
Would be good if you (or someone) could find and post a link to a pdf of the installation instructions...
