That's sounds like it's gonna be cheap, anyone had this done? What sort of price did you pay
Not sure about the slave and master but i'm about to get clutch and perhaps flywheel done.. £1800 all in for both with labour.. I'd expect the master and slave to be about another £1000 again once labour is factored in..
Master and slave are just over £200 for both and expect an extra hours labour.

R1RS4 wrote:Hi There Myles and all,

Just to throw some further thinking into the discussion re clutch sticking down

Whilst I was in my stealers today (Camberley)collecting my car after its service ect, I thought I would ask to speak to Rob (RS Man) re this issue after reading last night and ask his thoughts on the matter and where I stood with Audi if mine suffers with this

I said I had read preaviously that RS4 owners had replaced Master & slave cylinders, clutch and pressure plate, release bearing, return pipe fly wheel ect ect ect

He said firstly distiguish between slipping clutch through wear and tear age or slipping clutch due to peadle staying down

In his expirence he said there was two main reasons for the clutch peadle staying down, firstly the return pipe issue where the standard pipe had too smaller bore restricting the return flow, some were replaced under warrantee, some replace under Audi's decression/customer relasionship others at the customers cost, the second reason being the release bearing sticking on the main gearbox shaft spline

He said they would replace any of the other items unless they were proved to be faulty

I will not be testing mine for the clutch issue until the full warranty kicks in .......soon!
Worn pressure plate can also be the cause. Only way to be sure is to do the lot.

I have had the typical sticky clutch issues since I got the car. Not anything terrible, just the pedal getting stuck half way back up after either a bad gear change at high rpms (slipping a little by accident) or from a bad rev match (same) .

I also got it whenever I would push the clutch pedal down from very high RPMs and not change gears. i.e. doing an Arthur pull from 3000-8000 in 3rd gear, hit 8000 and then push the clutch in and coast. That would 100% of the time produce sticky/stuck clutch pedal.

Anyway, a month or so ago, it got really bad. Started happening all the time, especially when cold. One time I left my garage and while sitting at a red light with the clutch down in 1st gear, the car stalled and the clutch was stuck to the floor (had never done that before). I pulled it up with my hand, restarted, and the clutch was a bit stiff, but after a couple of pumps, it was normal. I drove away fine. That happened again a week later. I told JHM that I would be ordering a stage 5R clutch and LWFW soon because I thoght my clutch was going out.

Then a few days later I had a flashing hand-brake light along with some beeping. Looked it up and it was a low brake fluid warning. So I bought some, filled up the reservoir and went about my business. Car was fine, but clutch problems kept happening. Then the beeping came back a few days later so I filled it up again. Used a litre in total with the two warnings.

It happened a third time so I took it to the dealer. I still have CPO warranty. They investigated for a brake fluid leak, and found that I had a bad Master cylinder. Since the clutch and brakes share fluid, this started to make a lot of sense.

They replaced the master and slave and a couple of lines, and gave me the car back a couple of days later. After getting the car back, it has been excellent and all clutch issues are gone. No sticky clutch. No weird stalls. No beeping low fluid warnings.

Not sure if this is any sort of cure...I still think the pressure plate can't handle high RPMs very well. But I think that some cars are suffering from Master/Slave issues to supplement the effects of the pressure plate's weakness.

p.s. We had to wait for the parts to come in, over a weekend unfortunately so my car was left at the dealer. First time it was left outside for any length of time. It happened to be during the ice storm that just hit us here near Toronto, Canada, so the poor RS4 spent its first weekend outside...and sure enough got punished by the elements with a 1/2" think coating of ice on the entire car!

Yo,

Had 2 RS-4's with same problem. Both a 2007 and a 2008 MY. Both times local Shop changed the slave (which is the one underneath) and both times solved problem. Both are hydraulic and since the "return" is the one that is under pressure most of the time, it dies first!

I would just get a JHM stage 1r clutch and lightweight flywheel or a 5r if getting supercharged. Better design eliminates lots of these shortcomings. Audi should have revised the pressure plate and cylinders.

worn pressure plate could be the slipping clutch issue

But I Cannot see how the pressure plate would keep the pedal down, ie if you lift the pedal with your hand or foot and its back working...they are not connected?

Doing the whole lot (expensive)....resolves it..... but does not get to the root cause
