Dropped all the oil

Post by MikaelBrutale » Sun Oct 27, 2013 12:15 pm

Hi There.

Had a very unpleasant experience yesterday. My RS4 suddenly dropped all the oil :ban:

Don't know what happened - drove very slowly in low revs and it suddenly sounded a bit strange. 2 min later the oil pressure warning turned on and I switched off the engine at once. And there was oil all over the tarmac... It came from the right side of the engine. Could see that from below - nothing to see from top of the engine.

Has anyone experienced anything like it? And what caused it? My RS4 just passed 100K KM, has been treated like a baby and been serviced even better.

It will be dropped off at Audi tomorrow morning for inspection.

Thanks

Mikael

Sump plug? Hard to tell without taking the undertrays off.

Make sure you stick a big note across the windscreen and attach another to the key saying "NO OIL - DO NOT START"

Remember speaking to a customer years ago who was involved in an accident that split the sump, he switched off straight away, he said it only needed a new sump bolting on and refilling up with oil and then seeing if the engine ran okay. However the dealership ran it and ruined the engine, was a nightmare to sort out, his word against theirs etc etc

That is superb advice - very easy to forget esp when when not not your car.
Almost worth taking the starter fuel de out or disconnecting the starter button!

Update!

It was the oil cooler pipes :audibash:

Haven't received the final verdict yet, but seems nothing drastic had happened. :bigblink: Lucky I drove with very low speed and wasn't on way way back from the Ring like I was 3 weeks ago - with 280 on the Autobahn..... :rocker:

Cheers
Mikael

Props for 280. as someone with no prospect of a trip to Deutschland, how did that sort of speed feel in the wheel and the seat of your pants! Light and floaty or good Audi engineering?

It normally is the oil cooler pipes - it's a well known weakness.

These oil cooler pipes scare the hell out of me as well.

To inspect, once the plastic under tray has been removed, are they easy enough to spot and access? After doing some searching on the forum, I really like the idea of cleaning them up and putting Hammerite on them, a very sensible solution done by a few members.

Thanks..

Mines going in tomorrow to my garage I have used for a few years Local Ito me called Balance Motorsport to have a new A/C condenser and also new Aux Rad. I just called him as when he has popped off the bumper etc. I am going to give the oil cooler pipes a check over, hit them with cure rust, clean up and then hammerite them up....That's providing they done need complete changing of course....I'll take a few pics and post as then peeps can get a feel for what condition they are in after 61k and original pioes from new.
