rs4 availablity

Post by rubez » Wed Sep 04, 2013 4:25 pm

hi, i am hoping to get an rs4.

always wanted one, now that i am looking to replace my car, the prices are within reach :)

i see two problems. their rarity and the high mileage.

first of all, the rarity - the only places i have checked is ebay, the audi site, and pistonheads. there aren't too many results, and even less suitable ones. though, i will keep trying... where else can i check for second hand rs4's?

also, the fact i am in scotland probably means it will be ages away.

and then the mileage. due to the fact they are usually from 2006 era, most of them have a high mileage. you are probably doing well if you find one that has only done 60k! most are much more than that... 80k, 90k etc. how much of a problem is this? what is considered 'too high' a mileage? i imagine an engine rebuild would be catastrophic in financial terms.

i was looking to buy in december-ish.

thanks!

i was wondering WTF that FON thing was

seriously though, what do you think on the mileage aspect?

i have seen rs4's on pistonheads with 1 miles on them - engine rebuilds... would this be because the engine blew, do people like to pre-empt and rebuild at a certain milestone, or what?

i would normally consider a car with 100k on the clock to be well past its glory days...

though i hear NA engines are more robust, my old car was a turbo import impreza, and engine rebuilds are common.

Welcome aboard.

Engine re-builds are not common and low millage examples can be found, it just takes time. For example a forum member on here is selling his and its only covered 10k from memory.

Bottom line is - What's your budget and body style preference? We can then advise if that’s achievable with the millage you'd like it to have, condition and history should play an equal if not more important role in the buying decision too.

A 100k mile for a modern mass produced V8 isn't even breaking a sweat. Interestingly, a massive percentage of V8s in Australia and the US of A will get scrapped without ever getting their heads lifted or have anything more than a 'big service' (plugs/belts n chains etc).
A B7 maintained to Audi spec should be good 'till the end of it's service schedule. Of course, there are other jobs and known issues that would need attendance to keep it in 'better' mechanical order.
A forum car with good history is a smart choice. A West Yorkshire/Bradford special, wouldn't.

And I've never heard of anyone rebuilding one to prevent it going pop later, although I do seem to recall someone (Danny?) having a spare engine that they intended to rebuild or experiment with.

rubez - FON.

Also, you shouldn’t have a problem finding one in Scotland. The place seems littered, with most of the owners off-shore.
Aberdeen seems particularly rammed with RS's
VW Toe-rag V6 R-line.... no curry hooks...wtf ?

£20k will get something decent. Especially at xmas time... a well looked after 100k miler wouldn't bother me, it would others, but if you're gunna make it your own and modify it then it's a great value starting point.

I'm on 130k but I drive a C5 RS.

in little letters towards the bottom it tells you

"on v car"

at this price, probably a cat C.

everything has its price, there are seldom "bargains" without a reason at this level of car. dont be fooled :)
