My car has also suffered this problem with newly fitted discs with about 5k miles on them. Audi replaced front discs and pads under warranty / goodwill. When I asked I was told that there was no specific bedding in procedure for the discs other than to go easy on them for a while. I wouldn't be at all surprised if that scanned pdf circulating on here is a hoax so will not be doing that to my new discs and pads. How could any car manufacturer expect their customers to do that, let alone Audi.
Does anyone have any experience of cleaning the running faces of the discs with emery cloth?

I don't think it's a hoax, I'm pretty sure somebody has posted a thread about how to bed the brakes in properly and it was something very similar, if not identical.

just because there is a thread on here does not make it fact.

I've emery clothed disc's when swaping from pad to pad as some don't like to go over others, I have used a random orbit sander with no issues.

Thanks, I was thinking of doing the same.

The actual process is perfectly valid... it's just the quantity that is a bit suspect.

Have your wheels ever been refurbed?
If so, that could be your problem right there... ;)

I am new to this Forum as I have only just purchased my 07 RS4 Avant last week, knowing it had serious brake issues.
Not judder, just no brakes, and with pitted discs with high lips on the front.
It was a very low mileage example, but had been standing around too long without regular usage, the brakes were crap despite recent full Audi Service!
Through this forum, I got onto Marcus at Disc Skimmers, who probably is the only guy in the UK that can sort out brake judder and brake issues on the semi floaters of an RS4.
He arrived in his mobile unit and first checked that the discs were within thickness limits, carefully dissembled the calipers and tied them out of the way, finding that the pads were down to the rivets and corroded onto the retaining pins, so not moving as the should.
He then set about skimming and truing each disc on the car with a Pro Cut Lathe, that he had modified himself to deal with RS4 semi-floaters, until they each ran with zero "run out".
He then fitted new EBC, Yellow Stuff pads, supplied by me, taking care that they would freely move on the pins and sliders, using "copperslip" sparingly.
This involved removing some of the yellow pad paint before he was happy.
He took his time and was very thorough and the whole process took 5 hours.
For this excellent and very professional service, he charged me £320.00 (NO VAT)
In talking to him it turned out that he was a motorsport engineer with Formula 1 experience, now working on his own.
He had come across many brake judder issues with RS4's but seemed to have all the answers, particularly with bedding in pads discs and and brake usage.
The other main cause for judder was refurbished wheels that had been painted on the mounting surface, which should be dead flat and true.
Paint and in particular powder coating on the mounting surface of the wheels can affect the wheel and the disc running true and cause judder in a very short time!
The result of his work is that I now have RS4 brakes that work better that the Brembos on my 996 GT3, smooth, but powerful and progressive as brakes should be.
If your brake judder persists I would suggest you contact Marcus, who may be able to solve your problem at very little cost!
His mobile number is 07824 903006 and his website can be found at http://www.discskimmers.com.
I would recommend this guy to anyone with RS brake issues!
I hope that helps - By the way I love the RS4, particularly now I can stop it!

RS4 BRAKE JUDDER

Post by Madmonkee » Wed Dec 12, 2012 11:29 pm

I gave up worrying about it, do a couple of "slam stops" from speeds and it reduces judder by a considerable amount.

Hi ASH555, Will let you know, but it makes perfect engineering sense that if all the discs are running true, with zero "run out", then you are in with a very good chance that it will stay that way!
Even new discs can be way out of true, so spinning them up and lightly skimming them on the hub they are fitted to has got to be a sound method of getting then straight.
EBC's are coated to assist bedding in but Marcus advised that "bedding in" should consist of several really hard stops from 60mph to 20 mph, preferably on dry roads with no-one behind you!!!, letting the discs cool between each stop.
I am usually light on brakes so I will be doing this from time to time to prevent any disc or pad residue build up, which our other Forum members are advocating.
Using the handbrake while stopped in traffic or at lights also seems to be a common thread of advice.
Give it another couple of months and I will post an update of how my brakes are performing.
My guess is that they will be judder free.

Well said Sprint Blue, but there are plenty of places in the UK that have the ProCut kit. I had mine done back in the summer at South West Lotus Centre in Lifton, Devon. My issue was very very slight run out on one wheel that in a short space of time after replacing the discs was causing significant judder.
