My first Audi/RS4

Post by mikouk » Sat Dec 01, 2012 6:32 pm

I bought my Audi RS4 B7 AVANT on Thursday but have only just had a chance to put some pics up. I've never had an Audi before but so far I'm very impressed! The RS4 is astonishing. I've never driven, let alone owned, anything like it before. I think I got a good deal. 55k miles 57 reg, Comfort seats, MFSW, Black optics, FASH. I paid 20k.

It seems to be in good condition and has been looked after well. It had a new engine, clutch and cats in February all of which comes with a two year Audi warranty. I didn't buy it from Audi however. It also seems to have had all its shocks replaced as well due to leakage (drc probs I assume?)

A couple of things are annoying me though.
The brakes seem to judder at low speeds. Maybe judder isn't the right word. Its like when ABS kicks in but at a very slow rate.
There is a very quiet but constant buzz that I thought was coming from the speakers but turning the stereo completely off does't seem to solve it.

I'm not really into modding (after a very bad experience with a Volvo T5) so I think the exhaust and engine will stay standard but I would like to change the steering wheel as its the MF one and it's just not special enough. Maybe the brakes as they don't seem that strong. The one thing I really want though is to be able to connect my iPod through the Nav system but I can't seem to find a solid answer/solution.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi and look forward to learning about my new motor.

Cheers
Mark from near Southampton, Hants

The B7 comes with Bose as standard and the Bose amp is on from the time you unlock the car until you lock it (or 30 minutes after you turn the ignition off), that's the sound that comes from the speakers.

Really? Doesn't sound right to me, the brakes should be very strong. Has the brake fluid been changed recently?

The only decent iPod connection method is with AMI (that's the only way to get album and track info on the sat nav screen), but to fit that you have to also swap the sat nav to the newer 2010+ version.

P.S. I'm also in Southampton.

Welcome and FON

Judder from the brakes could be either slight disc warp and / or build up of material on the discs, both of which are one of the few fairly not uncommon (and irritating) issues with the B7 RS4. Might also explain why you don't feel the brakes are very strong. When you have an hour to spare, it would well worth taking the front wheels off and giving the discs a good blast with a hose, and cleaning out the vent holes, then taking it for a spin* to see if it makes a difference. If no difference, probably disc warp, which can usually be solved by having them skimmed.

* after you've put the wheels back on of course! :bigblink:

Nice and shiny though - enjoy!

Thanks everyone.

Dalo & Dave - thanks for the advice on the brakes. I will check and try both ideas. Cheers

Dave - I assume swapping the Sat Nav won't be cheap? Would it be easier to just either get a parrot system or another completely new double din unit?
The buzzing drives me mad but it's good to know it's not just me. I'm not that impressed anyway with the bose to be honest. I think Bose are extremely overrated/overpriced in general anyway.

I don't suppose you were driving through Hythe last week were you? I've never seen an RS4 around here at all then saw one a couple of days before picking mine up.

Cheers

Hi Mark,

Looks like a nice clean motor you've got yourself there, seems like a good price paid too. There's some B7 RS4 bargains out there currently, I think the resale values are going to firm up a little soon (i hope!) so it looks like you've got into one at a good time. Welcome!

I really wouldn't go down the aftermarket double DIN route if I were you - it'll look like a Halfords special and you'll lose lots of functionality :bash:

The forum search function is your friend - search for 2010 RNSe and you'll find lots of discussion, tips and idea of cost - there was a new guy on here within the last week looking into it

You could the Bluetooth stereo route for a lot less money (click on the link in my signature). Nothing beats wired sound for outright quality - if you're a real audiophile it's not for you. I'll be updating that post in the next 24 hours to list another device that simplifies things a little. If you're using a classic iPod it wont't help, just iPod Touches and iPhones, androids that have bluetooth stereo.

Plus several of us have already done it (see my sig) - if you get the parts of eBay it can cost less than going the aftermarket route.

Thanks guys. Wouldn't a whole new system cost the earth though? The ones on ebay all seem to be going for over a grand!

I might look into the parrot systems. I had a mki9200 in my 130i and that worked brilliantly, just a shame about the extra bits you have to have stuck to your dash.

I will do some research. Thanks again

Take that back. I've looked properly now and they seem to be going for just over £400. I'd need a new faceplate though and someone to fit it. I'll do more research!
