Wynns Dip 3 and carbon clean story

Post by Scatman » Fri Jun 29, 2012 7:47 am

Hey

I finally decided to book my 2006 RS4 in for a full carbon clean. It has 70,000 miles and I reckoned it would be pretty bad. However - manifold off and yes there is carbon but not all over the valves just on the bottom. Also it's soft and moist! (still reasonably sticky and tough to get off) but not nearly as bad as some I have seen on here.

Now I'm wondering if the 4 treatments of Wynns Dip 3 intake spray I gave it last year managed to soften or even get rid of some of it!?!?

Pictures on the way

Were you down on power?
Did you have it dyno'd prior to having the carbon looked at ?

I felt that I wasn't getting the full 414bhp but that's just judging from previous cars I've owned (E46 M3 being one). I was getting a major service done anyway and a lot of the engine bay had been dismantled so I went ahead and got them to remove the manifold following a bore-scope examination of one of the valves which clearly showed carbon build up.

Give me 20 mins and I'll have photos.

They don't look that bad at all, mine were worse than that and it was done at 42.000 miles, I reckon it has alot to do with the type of driving we do ie motorway, or just stuck in city traffic, my mates car had done 45 with hardly any carbon build up at all and regally thrashed the nuts out off it!!

None of these car make 414 bhp stock as that power claim was from Audi running the engine without any ancillaries on it (gearbox etc). There are many carbon threads on here and many an expert on the subject too. There seems to be no difference to carbon build-up depending on driving style, we all thought hard driving would prevent the problem but this doesn't seem to be the case. Mine puts out 389 bhp which is what I'd expect with 40k miles on her. I'm happy with this output and if I need more power I'd see MRC, Revoultion or Unit 20 and get a CAF and remap. Good luck with the clean, I might wait until 60k for mine.

Hi Scatman, that's looking not to shabby. Can I be nosey and ask to to describe how you use your car? We're all creatures of habit and routine. You might not have had the car from new which makes the exercise less useful, but still, it'd be interesting from a carbon point of view. Cheers.

Hi

I drive with enthusiasm and I have had the car since March 2010. I've put about 12,000 miles on it. Previous owner was a motorway driver.

Judging by those photos .... I wager that it doesn't really need doing.

It would have been interesting to have both a before & after dyno.

I'd actually say they look pretty damn amazing... 12k miles and you can still see the metal of the head through the carbon!
If thats down to wynns then it's a bargin at 10 quid a can.
