when changing brake discs

hi guys
I never had any warning lights come up, but during my last service in February the chaps @ Audi victoria mentioned I would have to replace the front discs in the not too distant future so I have recently called Audi Camberley to ask about the procedure (and costs) to change the discs.

Rob, very helpful as always, essentially told me that unless I had a feeling that the car brakes less, or is less responsive on the brake pedal (which in fact it is not, as it brakes perfectly) to wait until I get a warning light and only do it then. He said the RS4 has sensors for the front discs that will warn me.

now.. unless I am missing something, this is not correct: the only warning light you get is for worn pads (which have already been changed a while ago), not worn discs right?
how is one supposed to know apart from visual inspection?

Mate, just gone through the manual and there is nothing on the DIS for the discs only the pads. If she brakes ok and not the discs are not hugely lipped then just keep on keeping on! I'd wait for fade or wobble, I thought I changed mine too early I think but they looked sooo bad when I did and now the stopping power is frigging awesome so I guess is was about right.

Audi recommend changing the discs when they are at 32mm - they start at 34mm

So if you put it into Audi and it here is a bad lip they will advise they need changing.

Be warned though - getting done at audinwill be £1,250 just for front discs and pads.

Better to source the discs elsewhere, buy something like ebc yellow stuff pads, and have an Indy fit.

For example I just had mine done this week.

Discs: £440
Pads: £180
Labour: £175 (included brake guild change, and fitting new Piaa builds I bought ages ago)

Total: £795 a saving of over £455 (as I had brake fluid change done as well)

Only the pads have a wear sensor.

The other cables going to the disc are for the ABS sensor. If you get a fault with that then the ABS symbol will illuminate.

yea that's what Rob quoted me (roughly £1200) but he said he might be able to bring that down a little. where did you find your discs at £440?? that's really good! also can you please tell me which exact type of pads you bought?
did you ever change the rear discs?

For the disks there was a group buy a month or two ago - in the group buy section.

Stoke Audi who supllied for the group buy are still selling the discs and a failry good price: http://www.stokeaudi-parts.co.uk/produc ... R-PRICE%29

Other option would be to keep an eye on ebay


Pads i bought from: http://www.ebcbrakesdirect.com/ just put in your reg and it will show the pads for the car, you want the yellow stuff ones (not the red stuff)

Havent changed rears yet as they dont need to be changed just yet - wont be long though

Still, I would have reservations in having someone not trusted change the brakes... can anyone recommend a reliable indy in the London area?
if I understand correctly the sensors must not be messed with in the process

ok so it's fair to say that he would charge £150 for brakes only. which means a total of £850 for everything....that's a good £350 less than audi
