Alternatively (and this is the point of my dealer), is there a need for an RS4 when the S4 has 344bhp?

Which is of course all that most punters seem to care about!

The fact that the 344bhp is obtained at 7000rpm, and the peak torque is only (yes I do mean ONLY) 410Nm means that the S4 will never satisfy the desires of the previous and current RS4, RS6, modded S4, and "S3-wanting-to-move-to-a-bigger-car" owners.

Of course it makes sense for Audi to see how the new S4 sales will go before committing to the investment in the new RS4. Which of course brings us to the same conclusion: The RS4 must be AT LEAST another year away, and more like two years.

...and what makes the S4 or even the RS6 look like just another estate car...

And that's something that I'm actually quite happy about!

I've only just really got used to the new A4 shape, and then only if its in the S4 guise. I'm not sure I'd like it even fatter than it already is!

Oh, and please Audi, can we have a V6 and NOT a V8.

Nooooooooo.......I want a V8. Having had the RS6 for a while, I have to say, the engine is absolutely sensational

No, want the v6 too. I'm happy with the 2.7 v6 , but i think there will be a v8.

I must say that a lot of you out there sound like you would be major dissapointed if the next RS4 didn't have a pair of turbos strapped to the side of the engine. But don't dismiss natural aspiration (non turbo) just like that without first seeing what Audi will offer.
I think Audi will have some sort of 4.2(+) Fsi V8 producing 400+ hp (probably yet to be decided). It will sound the dogs.... (a V8 will always sound meaner than a V6). I dont quite expect it to rev to 9,000rpm as mentioned in another thread- that a lot of metal to whizz around at that speed.
The only down side to this engine would be a lack of torque -cant see it producing much more than 320lb/ft.

For you turbo-heads you can always dream of a world with 3.2 V6 Fsi twin turbo mother with 440hp (cant eclipse the old rs6) and 400lb/ft torque

Speculation.. just pure speculation

If its an FSi it will sound like a diesel. Nice !

No way does a V8 sound as good as a V6 unless you are American.

For me the sound of a TVR trundling down the high street is a turn off. Its worse at full lick. Have you heard an RS4 at lick - its awesome.
Standard RS4 (is it the only standard one left?)

I think Audi need to get 400lb ft at least to compete properly

I also think the RS4 can be quicker than the RS6, compare the S4 and S6, they are aiming for different market places

Fingers crossed it will be worth having
Can't beat a bit of boost!

Have a V8 here in the toy cupboard that sounds nothing like an American car, although it does have a Tubi exhaust and is made in Italy :assflash:

Can only mean it begins with an "F" and ends in "errari" then!

Simon, your toy cupboard sounds like my kinda cupboard. Followed a friend to Donington on Monday. driving behind his tubi'd - up 550 Maranello (okay the V12 - but Tubis keeps it relevant!) and it was like driving behind an earthquake  Anyway, further to your point, the loudest car I have tested to date was a 355 with Tubis. 114 DB at 5500, so for posing only, not track or any other days! :D Quite right, that V8 sounds nothing like a normal V8.... Spine tingling stuff. If Audi can get a high revving V8 to sound anything like that, even if its only 2.5hp then I am writing the cheque :D
