Also if you're ever in the Aberdeen area with the RS4 engined 80, do let me know as I'd love to see it!
Yes that is Hamish, he has made a beautiful job of his car. I supplied his rear wings from my moulds. :)

Can't wait for Hamish to post his next updates. I spent several days reading the entire thread. Phenomenal.

Absolutley, I used to mess around with metal & bikes but the scale of these 2 projects & the sustained attention is massively impressive - congratulations

Absolutely awesome thread - I don't have either the technical skills or patience frankly to do somethiing like this so its always great to read about somebody who does.

Superb. I guess an inline 5 with a big hairdryer on it would've been more genuine but that is going to sound brilliant as well.

No to keep it original it would have to be a 1.6 na that revs to 9000rpm

And I have done the i5 turbo conversions to death, so the V8 was the only option to stand out and be different :)

Not had much time to play again lately. However started to do some work on the manifolds....

Back when I put the engine in I just cut the long extension off so at a later stage I could extend them into the correct location.

Here is a picture of 1 standard manifold

Image

So I started by roughly tacking one of the collectors into the correct position on the RH side of the car.
The collector from the LH side almost fitted perfectly on the RH side upside down it exited under the subframe at the side of the gearbox just like a UR and S2.

However once it was tacked it was physically impossible to remove the header without first removing a half shaft and then lifting the engine above the chassis rails. Also if I wanted to get the gearbox in and out in the future I would not be able to get the bell housing past the downpipe and therefore all together will not do.

So then Mike suggested why don't I connect the 2 small downpipes together with stainless V bands so I could just remove the downpipe separate to the headers.

This would have worked just fine and I have ordered a pair of V bands to use if I do go down this route.

Meanwhile, I have been struggling to get the absolute measurements for the crank position sensor. So another friend came over today to stick his S5 on the ramp so that I could have a look. Unfortunately the gearbox in these are different again and the crank position sensor is right on the bottom of the bell housing. One awesome thing about these boxes is that the driveshaft outputs are virtually touching the engine right up against the end of the bell housing. This means if someone wanted to mount their engine and box rearwards another 5 to 6 inches to shift weight, with this box it would be possible.

However whilst I was under there I could not help but notice that the exhaust manifolds looked almost exactly what I need.

So a quick search on the net and I have found these. They are again on the way from Germany so when they get here I will update you as to whether they fit or not :)

4 into 2 headers would sound interesting.

Some manifolds landed in the post today from German eBay so tonight I have had a play...

The header flanges are identical between, RS4 (Left) and S5(Right)

Image

Here you can see the side profile difference

Image

First thing is first I don't want to have a large 4 bolt flange so I will cut that off

Image

Image

Then I will TIG on the V Band

Image

Image

You can just see in the top of the picture now where the V band is I have loads of room for a 3" downpipe each side now

Image

So both manifolds have been bolted on and ticked off the list :)

And I have now fully installed the large Alloy radiator and begun the nasty task of figuring out how to plumb it all...

Would be very interested to see what the new manifolds do to the sound. Supersprint were working for ages trying to improve on OEM but never got there, this looks spot on and with 3" pipe to boot rather than 2.5" or 2.75". Well done Tonks.

How much were the manifolds roughly if you don't mind me asking?

The manifolds I found on german eBay, shipped to my door for £94 for the pair :)
