I though parts of valves and manifold were coated as well? Would scouring not scratch this?

My thoughts exactly,
I thought they would have to be polished and skimmed maybe? I remember years ago when I did the head, manifold and carb on my old Fiat 127 Sport (in orange) I did a similar thing and had nightmares with compression as the scores were causing leaks. Admittedly I was making the gaskets out of ceral boxes and tin foil but they worked. I had to send all parts off to be re-skimmed and polished :-( There were the tiniest scrathes but it had a bad effect. An extreme example I know.

Fingers crossed this won't happen in this case.

Good luck mate and look forward to reading this.
Shane

I'm told they're scotch bright's that are used for paint work, there's no way they would scratch anything and cause problems.

7 ports cleaned, 1 to go then the rebuild starts!!

All done!!!

Car started first time but complained about coolant, remembered the plug wasn't attached to the tank, oops!

Started again, all ran well, seemed very smooth at idle.

Am taking her for a spin later, will post more pics, findings, lessons learned, risks and issues later (can you tell I'm a Project Manager?)

After the first trip all I can sum it up with is "wow", car felt and sounded amazing.

The kick at 5,500rpm was better, it was there before but now it was a lot more noticeable. The car felt a lot smoother, it actually felt hard to drive a low speed with the "S" button pressed, it kangaroo'd everywhere unless you floored it!

I have a feeling it would be better on fuel too but I'm enjoying driving it too much so it's going to end up worse.

It was a job worth doing, not something I would do in a rush (we took 2 long days), certainly something that would be done if I ever changed the car for another RS4.

After seeing those pics without a doubt that is the next thing I am having done.

That pic with the carbon on the screwdriver blew me away!

Nice work

As we were cleaning a side each it was like a competition to see who could get the biggest piece, that one didn't even win!

I was surprised at how much was in there, made me wonder how the engine even worked with all the gunk.

great write up, how much would this job cost through a garage as i don’t know much about cars beside the basics.

Does anyone know any good independent garages for BHP testing and servicing etc around the Richmond Surrey area..

Thanks,

Iano
