EPC light, emission control system light, misfiring

Post by AndrewRS4Avant » Wed Jun 22, 2011 11:50 pm

I had a bit of trouble with the wagon after work this afternoon, is this familiar to anyone?

1) Drove to work, nothing out of the norm.
2) After work, pressed the start button, engine cranks as usual but does not fire into life for probably 4 or 5 seconds longer than usual amount of cranking.
3) Tickover was fine, no sign of lumpyness, gently pulled away and noticed the EPC light was on.
4) Stopped the car on the way out of the industrial estate and turned the ignition off for about 10s.
5) Turned ignition back on and pressed Start, engine took the same delayed 4 or 5 seconds of cranking to start. EPC light still on. Repeated this step, same result.
6) 1 minute later, gently drove up a slight incline, noticed misfiring where it's working a bit harder on the incline. Probably in third gear, less than 3K revs, light throttle use.
7) Noticed the "emission control system" light is on alongside EPC light, but did not notice exactly when it came on. Bottled out of using the motorway to go somewhere through fear of buggering cats and took the car back to the work car park. Got in my bosses Jaguar XKR which got us to the destination fine! (Although it previously had buggered cats which caused misfiring?! Cats were replaced and everything cleared up.)
8 ) 4 hours later returned to my car. Can't remember if it had the same 4 or 5 second cranking time to start (I'm tired).
9) Drove the car 1 mile back home, emissions control system light was on solidly but no EPC light or misfiring, car felt normal.

This smells a bit of coil packs does it not? If this caused misfiring then unburnt fuel would enter the exhaust system and upset the emission control system hence the associated light. I'll be on the blower to Audi first thing tomorrow for fear of causing damage to expensive cats.

Yup. Coil packs a big probable cause.

There has been a recent coil pack recall from Audi. Ask them about workshop campaign 28E9. [Coil Packs numbered 07K 905 715D or F are satisfactory]
