Question related to jump starting an RS4
Question related to jump starting an RS4
OK this may seen silly but....
Hooked up by wifes trusty 1.1 Polo up to mine to jump it.
When pressing the start button, got a very strange clicking noise for a few seconds and the car would not turn over...I know that car can be jump started because the RAC man did it earlier..
ANy ideas? Am I missing something and before anyone asks, it was all connected up appropriately
Cheers

Re: Question related to jump starting an RS4
make sure they are heavy duty leads and good contact to terminal/earth and get the polo started to give enough voltage once all connected
Re: Question related to jump starting an RS4
yep all done with decent leads and the polo was running
still nothing
still nothing
Re: Question related to jump starting an RS4
I know that a normal battery wont jump start these you have to have a jump/booster pack to do it, similar to ones they use for vans/small HGVs.
Call Audi assist or RAC they shoudl be able to do it...if the ticking still persists I think your starter motor might be shot.

Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a well sorted racecar

Sounds like a bad jump lead connection to me but if you say not...
did you do it at battery terminals or under bonnet?
If under bonnet how did you earth it?

Re: Question related to jump starting an RS4
cant see how starter motor would be shot as RAC man got it started a few hours before so I guess my missus's battery is not up to the job....
COnnected leads up to the connection points under the bonnet itself....It was a good connection..I had all electrics working again just couldnt get the car to turn over and had the clicking instead
Need to get the car jump started so that I can get the Camberley by 8 am so if RAC man can get to mine at around 6.30 am then I may just have to do that I suppose

Re: Question related to jump starting an RS4
give the polo some revvs and hold it at about 2-2.5k while you turn over the RS

Re: Question related to jump starting an RS4
drbru,
it is possible to have all the electrics powered up thanks to the jump leads but to still have an insufficiently solid connection to provide sufficient amps for cranking.
why don't you try and jump it directly to battery terminals?
or do you have a charger?

Re: Question related to jump starting an RS4
It may be possible that the battery on 1.1 polo does not have enough current to crank the RS...
When i tried doing mine a few months ago on a flat battery i had similar issue of ticking but no turnover on the RS, however after a few attempts from the wife's 1.4tdi polo battery it started...
As suggested, tried holding revs 2k-2.5k on the polo when starting, failing this, you may have to ask a neighbour or someone to assist using a bigger engined car?

Re: Question related to jump starting an RS4
I had to give mine a jump start last month and a saloon volvo was sufficient. I can't remember the capacity or if it was diesel/petrol, but it did the job.
I picked up the car after ten hours of detailing and the thing wouldn't turn over. I'm assumed it was from so many doors and electrics being turned on/off over a long day as I haven't had any battery problems before or since.

Re: Question related to jump starting an RS4
Thanks for all your comments guys...Ive just been advised by Audi that I shouldnt try jumping the car too many times due to risk of blowing my ECU!
That risk is enough for me to call Mr RAC man and get the car moved to the Audi service centre and sorted properly

Re: Question related to jump starting an RS4
The clicking is the starter solenoid engaging then finding there isn't enough current to start then dis-engaging then now there is enough current re-engaing & repeating.
I wouldn't worry about the ECU but to paraphrase Jaws "you are going to need a bigger battery" either that or put the existing battery on trickle charge.

Re: Question related to jump starting an RS4
We had a similar thing whilst on hoiday last year. A couple from next door asked if we could help, as they had a flat battery on their Nissan Partol (Big thing with a large Deisel engine)
They had tried jump startign from their 1.0L Polo, only to get the clicking sound you describe. We hooked it up to our Disco3 with the same leads, and the Nissan jumped into life immediately.
So as others have said, find a jump pack, or a car with a bigger engine! -- Good Luck

Re: Question related to jump starting an RS4
The starter motor on the RS4 takes in excess of 300 Amps to start it turning - you need good jump leads AND a high capacity (not just in terms of Ah but starting current capacity) battery to provide that, which the battery on a 1.1L Polo won't have.
Made sure my C1 got fitted with the cold climate diesel battery - which DOES have enough oomph to jump start the RS4 if I ever need it to.

Re: Question related to jump starting an RS4
All you need is patience, if you leave the polo running for 20~30 mins, whilst connected to the RS, I guarantee your RS will start, it is effectively fast trickle charging (if that makes any sense).
