Hi, hope someone can shed some light on a box problem. Not long bought a B7 RS4 as its been a dream of mine for a long time now. I saved and saved and finaly saved enough to get what I thought was the perfect RS4. I checked the service history before buying to make sure everything was in good order which it seemed to be. Its a 2007 so has not long ran out of manufactures warranty. The gearbox, clutch and flywheel had been changed no more than 2k miles ago so thought it was all good. Got home and found that the box is crunching if I change gear at any kind of speed, perfect when cold or if I take it slow. Had it down at audi and they say it needs a new box and the work carried out before is not covered. Surely the gearbox cant go after that kind of mileage.
Is there anything else that can cause a crunch?
Thanks
Jason

Re: Gearbox Crunch!!!!
sorry to hear that.
but has this been bought privately? was the car checked by Audi for a multi-point? if so they are liable for having missed to report that

Re: Gearbox Crunch!!!!
if the work was done by audi, call audi uk for goodwill
Re: Gearbox Crunch!!!!
Ye privately mate, im gutted to be honest! Just dont understand how the box can be knackerd after 2000 miles! Does anyone know if there is any adjustment on them?
Re: Gearbox Crunch!!!!
if the work was done by Audi isn't it covered by warranty?
for example, in the states warranty expires at 48k miles
but if they do warranty work at say 46k, that work is covered for another 12k or 24k from 46k depending on what the work was...
I'd call Audi and see what they say
if they replaced the gearbox/clutch/fw 2k miles ago and it is shot, either the work was done wrong, or the car was abused...
how many miles have you had the car for? (I'm assuming <2k since that is when the tranny was replaced)
was it making the noise when you took delivery?

Re: Gearbox Crunch!!!!
It's one of the downsides of buying privately... If you'd bought from and independant non-audi dealer then you'd be covered by sale of goods act irrespective of warranty...
However, all is not lost.
As Arthur says - if the work was carried out by the Audi garage then this will have it's own guarantee irrespective of the manufacturers overall warranty. Usually 12 months but not always (does depend on age) however a complete new transmission is a big job and will be covered. Wouldn't surprise me if this fact is neglected by some dealers.
Given that the problem is fine when cold or slow change then there is a possibility the wrong gearbox oil is being used or is underfilled/leaked.
If you can get the box oil drained and refilled with the best stuff you can get that meets the audi spec then this may make the problem go away. Obviously, try Audi first but if they didn't do the work then this is the best option worth looking at before major internal pulling parts out.
Adjustment would be next - given the box is right under the gearshift I doubt there's much scope. Oh, is it every gear affected or just some?
Edit: Just had a look through elsawin and adjustment seems pretty straightforward. Most of the hassle is removing the gear stick surround to get at the adjustment mech and then it's really only two bolts. One has specific measurements making it a pretty spot on change. How is the gearshift when cold? does it go freely into all gears quickly?
The only point that is of concern is the "slow" bit - the worst case scenario is that one or more synchros have failed on the gearbox. I would find it very unlikely that all of them would be shot even with a badly adjusted gearbox so important to know which cog's affected.
