Typical power and torque figures for RS4

Post by wolfgang » Sun Feb 06, 2011 2:07 pm

What are the typical power and torque figures I should expect my (fairly high-mileage) RS4 to achieve on a rolling road?

I understand that these cars don't put out the published figures but I was after a range that mine should be in for it to be deemed 'okay'.

Depends on which type of rolling road.

Dyno Dynamics, 360-380bhp
Dastek 380-410bhp

Not sure on other rolling roads. And Wolfy, you car has only got 50k miles on it hasn't it; it's hardly broken in!

370-380ps
They vary quite a bit from the various posts on here - but 380 would be a healthy standard car.

Friend has a RB320 scooby and even though its lighter, its slower than the RS4... esp top end.

use WHEEL power no correction factor, it's the only number that matters
300 to 320 would be good
25% losses x 420 ~ 105 which is pretty much in line with what a MAHA actually measures...

or a cf of 1/0.75 ~ 1.33 x 310 ~ 415 ~ 310 whp + 105 (losses) ~ 405

Pick any random number you like - it all depends on whether the rolling road operator knows what they are doing. Plus the RS4 seems very sensitive to intake temperature - which can rise very high on a rolling road, and lead to large reductions in power output.

Rolling road figures have produced massive debate on here in the past. IMHO they are useless as absolute figures and should only be used as a comparison for before & after figures on the same car.

The only reliable way to measure the output is to bench test the engine. This is how they are rated by manufacturers and often why when actually installed they don't match up to the numbers.
I mean take the B7 RS4 and the R8 v8 - pretty much the same engine (wet v's dry sump) but completely different air induction and exhaust systems so there's no way they should develop identical 420ps and 317lb/ft number and yet they do.
