Orange indicator removal?

Post by Revolution » Tue Nov 30, 2010 3:50 pm

Before we start......is there an easy way or a previous thread you can link me to the removal of them.

It was called detango'd look when i had my impreza's and you had to heat up the headlight unit, split and then remove the orange bit and reseal.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Haven't tried it myself but a good guide here -

Opinions seem to vary if necessary to actually remove the bumper or can just loosen it.

When I get round to the job I think I will try a sharp drill to break the orange lenses first.

Do you really think its work the hassle? Spliting open headlights etc etc? I think the orange looks fine.

Mmm, tricky one

I reckon we might be able to get to it from the rear lampholder?

Its bumper off really, the yolks might aswell be welded in,i had to chain drill them to weaken them and then use some duck bill pliers to twist and deform the cylindrical shape enough for the retaining joint to open up and let go! The force to just knock them out requires a sledge hammer and big balls! Heat the headlights up nicely in the oven to soften the lense retaining sealant and the same when rebuilding the headlight, its gets the sealant more workable and increases your chances of a 100% seal

Sonny has had them done. I think at mrc. But I think mrc don't want to do anymore cos too much of a PITA.

Got mine changed to OEM clear indicator units I bought from fleabay when it was in for a front bumper replacement. Then sold my orange ones on fleabay for more then I bought the clear ones. Bargain!

I would prefer to tell you how to do it than do it ourself. I think it is worth getting a a bit of heat onto the orange lens so it wants to pop out.

It is defintely worth doing - makes the car look fresher at the front. I am sure manufacturers do the orange on purpose jsut so they can do faceilfts easily in later life.

Memories... the oven bake and stickyness joy of de-tangoing... I remember it well
