Swap a B8 3.2 for a RS4?

Post by g75y » Wed Nov 24, 2010 3:35 pm

Assuming price was close enough, would you swap from an existing 2yr old A4B8 3.2quattro to a 3+ yr old RS4? It probably boils down to priorities and what your heart tells you vs your brain. But just wanted to hear others thoughts on this.

Reasons for sticking to the A4B8
- still under warranty
- newer platform, more spacious
- more advanced electronics - GPS, MMI + IPOD etc
- great B&O sound

For me the RS4. I came close to buying a new B8 S4 Avant, but bought a 3.5 year RS4 instead.

The performance, sound and looks won it for me.

You're absolutely right re priorities....but I can guarantee you'll be grinning a hell of a lot more in the RS4.... :D If you do the deal I doubt you'll regret it!

Wow they made B8 3.2 petrol?
Depreciation will be greater on the B8 and will prob cover depreciation and running costs if you buy a good RS4 in right condition at right price

Exactly the same for me too. I think if you wanted a "normal" car the 3.2 would be a nice car (my father has 3.2 Passat Estate & it is a good car, with Haldex AWD) but if you want to get something more special by the time I had looked at B8 S4s the RS4 made more sense to me.

Thanks. Yes the A4B8 is the more practical choice with the warranty and also being the new platform, it will not look dated so quickly. Its also nice to have the proper ipod integration and B&O sound system

My concern with the RS4 is that the looks are getting more and more dated and no telling what problems come up as the car gets older (DRC, carbon).

I don't think the B8 and B7 look that difference to be honest, I sometimes even confuse a C6 RS6 for a B7 RS4 (just bigger) but if you have to the latest shape then maybe that's more important to you than having an RS?

As for problems I think the B7 has shown its hand now and specialists know what to do, a B8 has long way to go before all its problems are revealed including that stupid handbrake and it's easy to see which one is better made.

have you driven an RS4? its a proper RS car.

you can't compare it to any S car that is made by audi, because if you are a driver and enjoy drivers cars then no S car can live with an RS4.

what are your priorities in a car? warranty / looks / technology ?

in my opinion the RS4 looks great and has quite upto date technology (sure, not as new as a B8 platform car) but looks far more special inside and out.

it drives and sounds are amazing, and is a totally practical car (not sure if the B8 is significantly more spacious than the B7??)

I'd suggest driving one, and then you will have your answer.
