Winter tyres

Post by bobbyRS » Fri Nov 19, 2010 10:38 pm

Just been to Kwik Fit to enquire about winter tyres for the RS4. Not sure what size my tyres are off hand- standard that came with it

Told me Continental don't do in that size, all other winter tyres (mentioned Goodyear and Michelin) are out of stock and won't be available in UK till at least Feb 2011!

Find that hard to believe. If anyone has had better luck- I'm based in East Anglia (Suffolk), I'd be grateful for any info.
Cheers , Bob

I had a set of Hankook Ice bears fitted on the GTI @ £109 a corner 2 weeks ago...the original PS2 fronts where getting marginal anyway.
Couldn't get (4) Vred wintrac xtremes anywhere in 225/40 18 size

on the frosty morning this week they seem really secure, last week when it was nearer 10c they felt a bit soft (understandable of course).
Potential of snow predicted by end of next week so that will be the first proper test.
But so far I'm impressed

I'm thinking if the weathers that bad i will use the Golf as I don't want somebody else running into a pristine RS4. It can stay in the garage, and if its not that bad its got 4wd.

The prices do seem to go up and down quite a bit even on the same site: I got a set of Vredstein Wintrac Extremes (255/35 R19) three weeks ago from mytyres.co.uk for £229 a corner. Camskills had sold out, which I took as a bad sign so I snapped them up. The price on mytyres went up to around £270 a few days later so I was very pleased with myself! I've just checked - they're selling on the same site at £192

I had a chat with an old school friend in Northern Ireland who owns a pretty big tyre and alloy wheel business and he couldn't find me a set of 19 inch winter tyres for me from any of his suppliers.

It cost £40 to have all the tyres changed over in a local area in Newcastle, which sounded a lot to me but I didn't have the luxury of time to shop around. I'd be interested to know - what has everyone else paid?

£40 is not a lot, doubt you'll find any cheaper for proper fitment and balancing. I got a second hand set of wheels in the end to make swapping between easier.

There must be quite a few RS in Newcastle area now!....

Had my continental's on now for 2 weeks. I went for 275/30 r19 they were a lot cheaper 500 for 4 tyres.

First time i have used winter tyres quite impressed so far. see how good they are when it snows.

It was very wet the last few days here. I do quite a lot of night time driving when the temperature is now below five degrees and I can definitely feel the difference grip wise.

Don't worry, your RS4 is still pretty rare! I've driven about two thousand miles in mine since I got it in early October and have only seen one other on the road. Your exclusivity is safe :)

Hi Klauster i have these continental's winter tyres and they are good and for that price its a no brainer.
If you get them you will prob find out that they are manufactured in 2006-07 thats why they are so cheap just like mine.

Great thanks, the way I'm thinking is, within reason ANY winter tyre is better in snow then a summer tyre... I have ordered them, think I got the last 4 they had :)
