Finally!

Post by shej » Wed Nov 17, 2010 8:18 pm

Hi I have left a deposit on a car i have seen..! :D The petrolhead in me is already thinking servicing and i am going to get the oil changed together with the air filter..

It is on a long life service but i believe 19k is too long in between services!

I will post up some pics as soon as weather picks up but i am totally in love with it..what an awesome machine.

I have ordered 9l of castrol edge 5w 30 fully synthetic which is the best one im led to belive..

I have questions re: filters..

Best to get from audi or do euro car parts do the same thing for less..they stock HENGST air/oil filter..

Or shall i order a performance filter such as BMC, but any issues with maf destruction due to the oil on them??

Where do you guys recommend ordering these or the performance air filter from from?

oh and what are the correct tyre pressures front and rear.. the car has standard 255 tyres..

congratulations, i got one in March - still makes me smile

you will need 10 litres and no less for an oil change, Castrol edge 5/30 is what i went with after reading many a discussion thread  If DIY, no harder than doing a 1.6 golf !

Mine came with a BMC, does have a nice induction noise, seems good quality, MAF sits far from it so no issues with oil.

I normally use Euro for parts but for the RS shelled out for a filter at Audi (£25-30)

enjoy, and get some pics up when you get it

Would I have to oil the K&N as have heard can affect the MAF, although 'R'e'S'pect_4 has mentioned filter is far from the MAF ?

I m sure nearly all non paper high flow flters will need oiled. It is usually the over oiling that screws the maf. When you over oil a filter oil wil get on the maf. If you run a high flow filter with no oil the small particles that hit the maf will damage it. We use ITG filters becasue they are foam and high flow but with a light oil on the outside, the oil cathes the small particles with no oil on the maf side.

ITG is similar to Pipercross i'm led to believe with different layers of foam and both very efficient.

Personally I'm a bigger fan of cotton filters and K&N units are sprayed (lightly) by a machine to avoid too much oil and MAF problems.
Take it out and remove dust once per year and no need to re-oil annually plus come with a million mile warranty too.
Cleaning every 50k miles will suffice.

A lot of Japanese drivers like the idea of dry filters by the likes of Blitz but tiny dust particles can get through the filter and into the engine.

We've never had a maf go with any of our customers from any filter since 1997 so I can guess you pays your money and takes your choice.

Mafs usually get contaminated and start to read wrong without throwing any codes. They need to be tested for peak values so wot runs on the road or dyno.

Is there not an issue with these induction kits just acting as a heat sponge and sucking in hot air from the engine bay, not cold dense air as would get from an enclosed airbox, thanks.

Hi Steve

Its just panel filters we're discussing.

The Gruppe M ram-ind kit is very nice but over £1k to buy!!

Twin air intake as per R8 would be the way to go but not looked at how or if it will fit.
