Digital speedo

Post by goron59 » Thu Sep 09, 2010 2:52 pm

In my old '08 A3, I could bring up a digital speed indicator in the DIS display - this is particular useful when abroad as you can set it to km/h.

My '07 RS4 doesn't have this, but wonder if other versions of the s/w do, or if it is something that can be enabled?

Dark red km/h lettering on a black background don't make for easy reading on the analog dial.

Afraid no amount of software updates or VAG-COM enabling will get it for you. I tend to use my Road Angel for speed rather that try to read the dial

I suspected as much, but you never know.

I use a TomTom (which also handily tells you the speed limit), but I'd rather not have a big bit of plastic spoiling the view :(

I use my PogoAlert as my speedo, it's more accurate than the analog dial, especially if you have 275/30 tyres.

Not in my book - that's a sweet looking gadget.

But only in km. However they do a GPS based HUD for $130 which does kph or mph... And doesn't require 'professional installation' which I gues is splicing leads in behind the dash.

+1 for RoadAngel (dash rather than windscreen mounted). When you are really thrashing it helps not to have to look all the way down to the speedo ... a quick flick of the eyes to the dash is much faster.

I'm sure it doesn MPH too - the device is european but that supplier is US so can't imagine they will be only MPH.

Also I've been speaking to them - they do an OBD2 cable interface so no wire splicing. Unlike most other devices it's can-bus enabled so even if you do want to mount it better you only need to hook into can high/low and the power options. Personally I quite like the idea of ODB connection as don't like cutting things if I can help it.

'course could go even more chav and fit what I've put in my track car but might be a little... to much for an RS4. ;)

I like the HUD gadget - there's an iPhone app that does that too - might give it a try.

Now a new steering wheel - that might be cool :-)

The wheel is cool - oil press/temp, water temp, fuel press, speed, revs, gear, lap counter with timing and predictive sector differences topped with a sequential RPM shift light.
Works great on the track... look a bit silly on the road but I'm generally wearing a helmet to so already look a bit of twerp ;)

Aha - got a reply.

- MPH *OR* KPH. It's not switchable but fixed to the unit.
- Shipping is $25 to the UK.
- Unit with OBD cable interface cable included in $179

So about 135 pounds. Considering most other shiftlights/speed indicators need speed and rpm pulses so a 50 quid can-pulse converter this is pretty good value.
