There is one on the airbox. Remove it. Flap mechanism in the intake manifold. Remove it.

Having done a few motorway miles in an '06 Avant this week I can confirm that the 'kick' is indeed a noticeable jolt not smooth! 8)

Hey fellas.

I noticed something today and I wonder if anyone else has noticed this.

I was parking in an underground car park so I turned off the "S" button as I drove in. I noticed that there was a short scraping sound before the engine sound changed. Repeated presses of the "S" button caused this 1-second noise. You can't hear it if you have the windows closed and is more noticeable if you're outside the car.

Any ideas? Perhaps something need lubrication.

Saw the sticky on testing flap function. Two questions:

1) would using VagCom be noticed by Audi and thus invalidate a warranty?
2) if not, does anyone live near Bromley, Kent and have access to VagCom? Would be grateful for some help to test the flaps.

I notice the surge at 5,500 rpm sometimes but not every time I have to say. It seems that dealers might not test it properly (pretty sorry state of affairs for a premium car marque) so I'd like to test it myself.

Cheers,
Mark

That scraping noise sounds like the flaps in your exhausts opening and closing and they will need lubricating. It usually fixes the problem but in extreme cases can recur and may need them replacing which in fact is replacement of the entire back boxes. If in warranty best to take it to Audi to get them to lube the exhaust valves; IIRC if it recurs 3-4 times within warranty time frame they will consider that grounds for replacement.

Intake flaps

Airbox flap removal, no problem. But intake manifold flaps, rather more difficult. Inlet manifold needs to come off. Also need to retain the tumble vane shafts and position sensors in order to fool ECU into thinking that all is well.

At least you'll be able to access the inlet valves to clean off all that carbon build-up!

As P_G says, if you stand out side the car and activate the 'S' button you will here the flaps clicking into place, do you have the buckets and if so and these are activated to come on when in sports mode, then it could be the seat bolsters filling with air.

I am from Bromly, but no VAG-COM sorry.

what is the problem to taking your car to 5000 rpm standing still? i cant see a problem as you take it way above that while driving i presume and for longer than you did while standing still.. the only problem i could see was air cooling as there is no forward movement to aid in cooling but short reving to that kinda rpm should do no damage IMO......
some one will be along to shoot me down in flames no doubt ....... :-)

Thanks for the advice. Will def. get the exhaust flaps checked out by a dealer although I tried to replicate the scraping noise today (same underground car park) and couldn't hear it.

sonny, I don't have the bucket seats so it wasn't that.

No trouble at all, as long as you warm the engine. If anything 5000 rpm when stationary is better for your engine than 5000 rpm in 5th ger going up hill - less load.

this particular lift sensor will not show up a fault on vag com,but once you see it ,it will be corroded and swollen, this will in turn cause the lift flap in the airbox to stick ,replace the sensor and order an airbox (it comes complete with flap and with a new airfilter :) this should also be covered under audi warranty or the audi extended warranty ,once these are replaced the "sparkle will be back"
