. A M3 CSL, with the most fragile of the BMW engines
The iron block S54 straight 6 in the M3 is probably one of BMW's strongest engines. The basic design has been used since the mid 80's. I've seen some M3's with serious intergalactic mileages on them and the engines and boxes were still sweet as a nut, and not a hint of smoke on start-up. I know of a couple of track slags with nearly 200,000 miles on them - still running well despite being thrashed to death around a track.

I think engine failures nowdays are just plain bad luck - maybe a small internal part that just wasn't cast properly at the foundry which resulted in a weak spot or area of tension within the material. When you build so many engines, a handful of them are just going to be "bad ones", it's life I'm afraid. It's the same in F1, they have the best of everything built to exact standards and even they have "good ones" and "bad ones".

My RS4 hardly uses a drop of oil, where a lot of others report huge oil consumption - I don't treat mine any different to anyone else, I think it is just the luck of the draw.

Hoping I haven't given myself the "kiss of death" now - if the RS puts a leg through the block tomorrow...................
