Thoughts on S5?
Thoughts on S5?
Neighbour was chatting earlier, he has a lovely looking S5 which he has owned from new. 2008, covered 15k. I mentioned that i fancied a RS4 and had been looking for one. Turns out he is seeking to sell the S5. He has 20" alloys but, amazingly NO SAT NAV... He didn't think it worth the premium! I've yet to drive an S5 but my understanding is that it has effectively the same engine as the RS4, detuned to 340ish bhp.
How hard is it to tune this engine to RS4 levels-is it just the mapping thats different? Anyone got S5 experience?

It's the same engine as in block and FSI, but that's about it. Not just a case of remapping, the RS4 has different throttle bodies, airflow, mapping, cams and a few other bits. Plus the drive of an S5 is way different to an RS4, much more a GT car than a road focused super saloon.
The S5 is a nice car, my mate has one with a full Milltek on it and it decently keeps pace with my RS4 on the motorways but on normal and country roads the S5's bulk and lack of tactility / grunt shows even at below national speed limit levels.

Is it not the same block that was used in the S4 (not FSI, and 32v vs 40v).P_G wrote:It's the same engine as in block and FSI, but that's about it. I'm lucky enought to have both, well the S5 is my wifes and I've got the RS. The S5 is faster than you think, but just doesn't feel it. There's no drama, just linear acceleration. Dynamically it's no where near the RS4, but it is a lovely comfortable, fast cruiser, a great GT car. If I want to have fun the RS4 gets the nod everytime. The S5 is a great car, it just has different strenghts to the RS, so don't dismiss it, it just depends on what you want out of a car. Looks wise, especially front on, it's far more aggressive, however the RS has a great behind, and those fabulous arches. Decisions, decisions !!!!
RS4 Avant, Phantom Black, SS+, Tech Pack + TV, Homelink, Heated F&R Seats, Auto Dim etc.

Good summary from a man who is fortunate to run both.Nipper wrote:I'm lucky enought to have both, well the S5 is my wifes and I've got the RS.
