I traded in my 997 C2S for the RS4. I wanted something a bit more practical so I would use it more (i.e. on weekends and holidays!).

Personally, I wouldn't say the driving experience was that far removed. Performance is very similar. The RS4's steering is weightier, traction is better but the 997's more nimble (all as would be expected). Overall, they're both brilliant drivers cars, but I'd have to say I actually prefer the RS4 marginally.
Reliabilty and ownership cost wise, both have been about the same for me, with the Porsche giving better fuel economy (5 mpg better on average), but costing twice as much to insure. No major problems on either.
Obviously the RS4 is more practical, but the 997's pretty good - you can get a fair amount in the deep front boot, and golf clubs will go on the rear parcel shelf with the seat backs folded. No issues comfort wise.

The biggest disappointment you'll have with the Porsche is the sound, so if you can find one with the sports exhaust, all the better.

I like the Porsche's compact size, and it's quite a nice looking car. However, if I had to choose one or the other, I'd actually go for the Audi I think, but that may be because I've had several Porsches.
As said above, if you've never owned one before, take the plunge and own an "iconic" 911 at least once in your life! If I did get another one I'd probably go for a C4S next time, as I'm used to the RS4's 4wd, and the fatter arse looks sexier as well...

Make sure the 997 comes with a warranty, though. As said above, Porsche only give you 2 years from new, but if you get it from a delaer it'll have at least a full year on it.I think the biggest area to watch for is electrical gremlins, but they are pretty well built.

So find yourself a good one, and enjoy! Here's a quick pic of the one I had ...

I came to RS ownership from a succession of 911s, including two C2Ss, and if it wasn't for my new, grown up needs (ie. family) I would have another Porsche tomorrow.
The solidity, the build quality, the usability and the speed are great.
The fact that they're not all that flash anymore is a plus, as is the practicality, especially when compared to something like an Aston, Ferrari 360 or R8.
However, are they special enough to replace one of the most charismatic cars around (while paying about £25K for the privilege)? I'm not sure.
As Sims and S2tuner suggest, have a go in a Turbo or GT3.
While the 997 is a good car, these two are great ones.

Go for the Porsche.

I own a B7 RS4 and a 2004 996 Turbo. Both cars are parked side-by-side at the office.

I find myself driving away in the Porsche 8 out of 10 times. To the point that I will be selling the Audi, it's just not getting enough sunlight.

An RS never feels dull. But the 911 feels special every day.

very good persepctive...
an RS4 will run away from a 997C2 and hold it's own with a C4S
996, not even close...
but these are STREET cars, and are limited in what can be done with them on public roads in the name of safety, and within that limited narrow envelope, there is no difference...

I have an e46 M3 and a 951 in addition to my RS4
they all have strengths and weakness's...over all, RS4 is the best compromise...
I have my eye on a 997 Turbo, carbon brakes, factory body kit, atlas grey/stone black, chrono pkg, 27k miles, warranty, $75k...negotiable...
also an aftermarket intake/exhaust/chip supposedly 570 HP
going to look at it next week...
I'd keep the RS and sell the M3 and 951...wife concurring, lol

Well, I had the test drive in the Carrera S today and I've got to say I was very impressed. It felt so solid and sharp & nimble compared to the RS4 which I was surprised at. Also, power wise there wasn't much in it at all; I thought I would find the Porsche lacking against the RS but getting back into the Audi it felt 'woolly' if you know what I mean. I guess a lot of that is down to weight.

I compared the two in my mind to when I used to ride bikes: the RS felt like a GSX-R and the Porsche like a Ducati 748.

I think my mind's made up, the RS could be going!

Both great cars, great bikes. But alas horses for courses. The 911 scalpel is that much sharper.

A 911 feeling is very, very special, you will probably want the 997GT3 in a few months. Upgraditis sets in quickly

Number of Driven wheels, body style/doors and engine all quite different so not a natural comparison of 2 cars perhaps?
I do like the confidence of being able to tackle any road in any conditions at real pace and with a smile - not skilled enough to manage that in 2wd 911 though, which probably says more about my abilities than the car's lol

C2 over the C4 any day, but if your budget can stretch to it, get the GT3, amazing car! Can be had for around 30k now...

Agree with summary. And 996 GT3 MK1 residuals will be solid, but not your every day car like the RS4. the 997C2s is closer that.

Suprisingly a C2s or 4s is a better everyday car than a SS+ equipped RS4 (ignoring the room aspect of an RS4) because PASM off is softer and PASM on is slightly firmer and in between it adjusts itself. The C2s and 4s really do GT and sports remarkably well. If you dont need the room I would honestly say that the modern carrera S's are better at doing everyday and sports than any other car I have driven.

You could drive to the local supermarket, go on a 2k miles European motoring trip, put in quick 20 laps at the 'ring - all with the pretty car as it comes straight out of the box.

And to boot reasonable fuel economy too, and dare I say better than the RS4. :)

But if you need the space for 4 passengers & their luggage, the RS4 will also do all of the above.

I agree although it is relatively pain free to put our baby in the back wife in the front, pushchair in the boot and overnight bag in the boot or behind me.
Fuel consumption it is in deed better than my old RS4, around town i see 20mpg whereas the B7 was reading 17 and on motorway I have seen 30.

Im really looking forward to seeing a B8 or 9 RS4 as by then I will probably need more space.

I was never totally convinced by the PASM on mine (it was a gen 1 997 - perhaps it's better on the gen 2).
In sport mode it was too harsh over anything other than smooth surfaces, and rather "jiggly" for want of a better word. Whilst the comfort setting was a bit too soft and at high speed lacked feel.
I had a non-PASM car as a loaner for a couple of days and personally found that much better in all situations. Such things are often down to personal prefence, though ...
