For those in need of Oil

Post by P_G » Wed Feb 10, 2010 1:37 pm

Just notice that Halfrauds have Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 VAG 504.00/507.00 spec oil 5 litre cartons with 20% off which brings the price down to £39.99 for 5 litres. Looks like it is for February only so grab some whilst you can get it; a fair bit cheaper than what Opie are offering presently on any VAG spec 5W-30 oils.

That's good value. Do cars on variable service interval require different oil to this one? Read something about it, but not sure where.

Found the article that makes mention of special snake oil.

I also found another oil supplier, which for the last service on my BMW worked out cheaper than Opie...

http://www.nielsencdg.co.uk/

It was for a longlife spec (LL04) Castrol oil.
No affiliation, etc.

Good find, but equates to £9 per litre, wheras Halfords one is £8 per litre, so thanks to P_G for the information.

A daft question, perhaps. I was going to buy 2 X 5 litre cans at this good price - do they have a shelf life once opened or unopened? :?

Given the oil will last 2 years inside the engine being heated etc. I wouldn't worry about shelf life within reason - I also think our cars need 2 cartons anyway ?

I've ordered some oil from there recently too, came out at £45 inc delivery for 5 (4+1) litres of Castrol Edge 5/30 (VW Spec) for the missus 2.0 TDI engine.

Handy and cheap for the usually required top-up bottle for between services.

Just picked up the 5 litre version from Halfords at £40. The 1 litre bottle is £19  . The top-up bottle would have been handy.

Halfords own label VW approved version 504.00 cost £42 for 5 litres. So right now they are selling loads more of the Castrol.

Still I think Nielsen are cheaper for 5L of Castrol Edge than Opie or Halfords.

Again, not affiliation, just an observation as a recent purchaser

Shelf life is OK, however a full oil change is actually 9.6 litres (having just done mine today) so you'll only have 0.4 of your 10 litres left which may be enough for one top up between oil changes.

Alternatively I may be able to get a deal on VW's own Quantum Longlife III 5W-30 at £50 for 10 litres plus postage if anyone is interested?

Well it had to happen. Bought my oil at the weekend and Halfrauds and then Opie pitch up with 2x4 lites and 2x1 litres of Mobil 1 5W-30 for £70 delivered, £10 less then I paid.

So another bargain place, just depends if you want it now or can wait for it to be delivered.
