Buying A New RS4

Post by Zed » Wed Feb 03, 2010 1:35 am

Have been reading the forum with interest over the last few weeks (some great info and advice!!). I am looking to finally purchase my own RS4 in the next couple of months - having driven one when they were first released in 2006 - it has been a long wait enforced by extensions and additions to the family!!
I have read about what to look for etc (much of it from this site) so feel I can at least ask the right questions.
I have between 26-30K to spend and just wanted some advice on what sort of age/milage car I can expect to get for that sort of money? There seem to be a few around in that sort of price bracket. Also am i best going Audi, independent or private? Sorry if you have answered all these before - I have probably missed the thread somewhere.

Zed, WELCOME, we would never threaten you on this forum LOL !!!

I would suggest a car from a franchised Audi dealer with a good warranty on it IMHO.

i got mine from audi last yr, at least u get 1yrs warranty which is some piece of mind. but some on here have dealt with good independent dealers so don't write them off if they have a good rep, a good car and offer warranty. HTH... Good luck!

Damn thought I had got away with the edit before anyone spotted it - Very sharp victor2vt!! Thanks guys. Looking for a Daytona Grey or Mugello Blue saloon and that was my next question - how much do you think I can push for off list price at an Audi dealer? Anyone had any experience of a good haggle?

It depends on how realistic they are in the first place. I think I managed £800 ish and a set of new tyres. They were legal but not to good. The car's have to be reasonably well prepped and do seem to move quite quickly.

As long as you are prepared to walk away then try your luck.

A lot depends on when you buy. My information was also that Audi dealers are targetted by model by volume/month, ie they can't coast along selling A3's they have to shift a certain number of the more expensive metal regardless. Perhaps someone can confirm?

My car was not prepped to showroom standard but I knew where I could get alloys and paint back to pristine condition (better than the dealer would) at a good price - I did have to get up out the chair while negotiating and was ready to walk away but as it was the classic 'end of month' and I took the car 'as is' I got £3,000 off.

You do have to balance price vs availability though - I haven't seen the same colour/spec again since so ultimately had I walked away I would have bought a car that wasn't exactly what I wanted

I bought from an independant but had them put an Audi warranty on the car so I think it is really a matter of finding the "best" car you can & then making sure it is covered for a period of time until you have a better idea of the car yourself. Although I guess a private car minus the cost of a warranty would also work ?

I agree with Mark758 - go looking and then offer a really low price on a car you want, but be prepared to walk away. The end on March (and thus the tax year) is a perfect time for big reductions!
Good luck
