Good riddance Continentals - Hello Goodyears!!

Post by rs4v8 » Mon Feb 01, 2010 6:44 pm

Finally getting rid of the P.O.S. Continental SC3s! Fronts are down to the wear indicators and the rears aren't far behind.

Best thing is that Audi are paying under my £19 p/m Maintenance plan :-) Audi only allow the contis, dunlops or the goodyear F1 in the standard size. Chose the Goodyears after reading the posts on here.

Hopefully the car will be better in the winter gloop now it's got better tyres on!

Question tho - Do the Goodys have any kind of rim protector?

Couldn't agree more :-)

The fitter told me that Audi would only supply the Contis under my maintenance plan. A quick call to Audi and they told me they'd supply the Dunlops or the Goodyears if it was all four needing changed. The lady on the phone just couldn't understand why I was so fed up with the Contis!!

Anyway, looking forward to tomorrow :-)

Continentals ( :piss: ) are to be avoided at all costs on the RS4!!!!

I have the Conti's and like them
run GY F1 A/S's in the winter, and they are fine too... http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp ... All+Season
Might try Conti DW's next time around http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp ... Contact+DW

Thanks for the photo ArthurPE :beerchug: Looks like they don't have much of a rim protector then, although the blurb says they do.

Maybe a combination of different weather / road types and surfaces etc make them good for the US, but the Contis don't seem to grip very well at all here in Scotland in pretty much any conditions :-(

You guys don't have roundabouts over there, but the SC3s allow my car to lose grip (you can hear / feel the scrubbing) even at fairly normal speeds on roundabouts where the original fitment pirelli pzeros would only let go at silly speeds and even then progressively. I've had quite a few frights with the Contis ! They were a giant leap backwards from the Pirellis the car came with IMHO.

I just had 4 new P Zeros fitted on mine today I'm not to sure about them, the dealer i brought the car off put them on as part of the deal when i brought it late DEC, because the Goodyear's it had on it had all the walls scrubbed, they had about 4mm left on them, they fitted P Zeros because the factory is in there town, do you think i should of pushed them for Goodyear's and what is it people don't like about P Zeros

I found the pzeros to be very good indeed and would have put them on again if I could have.

Most tyres seem to take a few miles before the proper level of grip is reached. Probably because the shiny surface from the mould takes a wee while to disappear. The exception to this rule is the Contis, which started ok but went 'off' very quickly indeed. Thankfully I didn't pay for them.

You might find that after a few days they'll get better. Hope so anyway.

I found the conti sc3 to be awful and actually worse than the SC2 I had before, which were also bad.

Now on Hankook RS2 for more than a year and love them to bits ssooooo much grip wet and dry., and they used to be half the price of the big makes.

The F1 Assys' rim protectors are next to useless. They won't protect your wheel at all, unless it's the most minor of grazes. They're only thin rubber with no reinforcement - bit like rubber bands really.........

Pirellis are good but soft, IIRC the average life taken from forum members who have had them on their cars is 8k miles whereas my Goodyears lasted 19k miles and would have lasted a bit more if I have rotated then and not had a puncture in one.

rs4v8 - Please can you tell me about this maintenance plan? Does it cover brakes as well as tyres? Is it an Audi thing or third party? I'd be very interested in that indeed!

Is this something lots of owners have got because I've never heard of anything like this before.

yeah Ive had enough as well and want the f1's fitted but I have different wear front and rear and call me tight and cautious but dont want to mix the treads so to speak by changing only two at a time..... I have tried swapping them front and rear once and see how it evens out but its a pain... Goodyears great value as well I ahve heard!

Had one set of Conti SC3's , agree they are useless, now on second set of Goodyears. If you have 275's then the rim protection is pretty good.

Interesting - I was told by my dealer when I purchased the car that Audi don't run a tyre plan!!! - thought it odd at the time as other parts of VAG do :?

Are these deals therefore a franchise specific deal. The chaps up in Scotland seem to get good after-sales deals which simply don't seem to be available in England (in the north-west at least).
