David - I can solve your problem, I had it following fitting SDS. Turns out it's to do with the position your manual key lock on the boot is in i.e. vertical/horizontal. I used the key to open the boot after disconnecting the battery, the only time I needed to. It drove me mad for days until I figured it out! It's a sort of anti-boot theft feature...

It still doesnt work! but in your defence the Audi Assist man thinks its broken, and the auto opening doesnt open all the way any more, not sure if this is due to the cold though

anyway, will book it into the stealer for them to repair
