good luck with the R20 justin, it will be a good car and looks nice (get a blue one!)
interesting that S3 owners have said what they have said. I test drove the 2009 latest version in Jan and felt it was bit boring and not special at all (I almost felt rude saying so

), then jumped back in the R32 and instantly was more fun, sounded a million times better (milltek non-res) and the steering felt sharper, the suspension felt harder and more sporty. Much more sense of occasion in the R32 (mk4 and mk5) than the S3. I don't see them really spooning this up for the mk6 (R20) as they did a good job on the last two cars.

The one thing I did notice regarding the R20 is how similar those alloys are the the RS6 alloys. In fact I noticed Audi have started started putting RS6 replicas on every car that doesn't have RS4 replica's.
Soul destroying.
Back on topic, they do look a nice car and like you say if you get a maintenance plan then you would be quids in. Unfortunately for me my heart rules my head on choice so the RS4 remains.

Interesting read this one - considering the way you seem to drive to and from work each day surely you will still get through fuel tryes and brakes in a similar fashion. I know that the Golf parts will be cheaper, but you have to consider the depreciation curve of both cars. The RS4 has done the worst of it's depreciation now - and if the running costs are really that bad, just drive differently. You can still drive fast without having your foot nailed through the floor. You'd be amazed how much fuel the golf will guzzle through if you drive it hard too, any engine that relies on boost to cater for the lack of displacement will like a good gulp juice.
How about driving an RS4 to the same performance of the golf - would probably be a similar cost? Only a thought.

i hear what you're saying mate and i agree i probably will use the brakes and tyres at the same rate BUT i'm going to get a fixed cost maintenance tyre and service plan -price probably around £40-50 a month. I've had this before on a Mk5 golf gti and i was quids in, each yr i had 6 tyres replaced with the plan and the service which would have cost considerably more than the £30 x 12 months= £360 a yr i paid on the golf.

I'm quids in with my maint plan already and there's still a year and a bit to go. Depends on your driving style I reckon. You'll deffo see more benefit from it if you're an 'enthusiastic' driver otherwise it'd maybe not be worth it.

Do the maintainance plans not have get out clause for a maximum number of tyres ,pads and discs during a specific period? If not, you could techincally "wear out" a set of tyres every month and still get them replaced for "free"?

My Golf R20 will be stage 2 plus = approx 350-360BHP;
TBE Milltek
Cold air intake
Stage 2 + remap, and DSG remap
Uprated fuel pump
It will have a better power/weight ration than the RS4, and when driven sensibly will get 30 plus, and keep upwith most cars on the road!
My longterm MPG on the RS4 was 16 something, but was well worth it.....

If you have checked the small print i think theyre in for a shock at how you get through brakes and tyres!!!!! The R20 looks nice but fwd and 2 doors doesnt put it in the running for me,it will be interesting to see how it gets on with tyres and brakes if you try and achieve the pace of an rs4 on a daily basis

I've just traded the RS4 in for a Focus RS. Not a patch in terms of interior quality (mechanically it feels more sound!), but a complete riot to drive.
Got a fully loaded RS, traded out of the RS4, walked away with cash, and got a new, 3 year warrenty, lower tax bracket, virtually as practical car.
Very happy with the decision so far.

Glad to hear you're happy with your change. I seriously thought about doing what you've done a while back.

Exactly what I did rather than buy a focus! Still an RS of sorts but with a V4
Quite honestly the best thing I've ever bought AND there's still a V8 to go with it
