Hi Guys,
Thought this might make an interesting read.
About six months ago after two to three hours driving I developed a loudish whistling coming from the back of the engine at about 1500 revs.
eventually however it started this same noise as soon as the engine had warmed up, so reluctantly back to the dealers thinking it must be an easy problem to rectify. How wrong I was!! First thoughts were its a steering box pump - that replaced, the noise was still there.
Next it must be the flywheel centre bearing - so new flywheel and clutch assembly fitted and all re-assembled. Oh dear noise still there !!
Next maybe the gearbox - so remove and run without - but noise still there !!
Next after consulting with Audi Germany who had never encountered this problem said remove engine and check oil pump and also induction side,
still no luck !!
Final remedy fit brand new engine (not a recon.) but brand spanking new !!
Oh yes whilst up on ramps DRC problem found - so fit new shocks and valve.
Out of interest the engine had done appoximately 17000 and 4500 on the last ltre. of oil and an awful lot of care went into the initial running in.
Finally, my dealership is Macclesfield Audi for whom I have nothing but praise for the way they have dealt with this problem.
ENGINE WHISTLE
RE: ENGINE WHISTLE
So what was the whistle noise then was it finally identified, surly a new engine replacement was not the only solution, was it laziness on there behalf? At least you ahd your DRC replaced.
Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a well sorted racecar
RE: ENGINE WHISTLE
I REALLY DON'T BELIEVE IT WAS LAZINESS AS THE CAR HAS BEEN IN FOR OVER 3 WEEKS, AND ANYWAY I MUST ADDMIT I DON'T THINK I WOULD FEEL QUITE THE SAME IF THE ENGINE HAD BEEN STRIPPED DOWN ANY FURTHER.AUDI DID SAY THAT AFTER A CERTAIN NUMBER OF HOURS HAS BEEN SPENT ON A PROBLEM, IT IS MORE ECCONOMICAL TO REPLACE.
THE ENGINE HAS TO GO BACK TO GERMANY TO BE EXAMINED AS THEY HAVE NOT ENCOUNTERED THIS PROBLEM BEFORE. WHEN I FIND OUT I'LL BE PLEASED TO LET YOU KNOW.
TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA HOW LOUD IS WAS, WHEN AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS FOR EXAMPLE PEDESTRIANS WOULD SHIELD THIER EARS FROM THE NOISE.

There's no need to shout!
Sounds to me like an air leak - maybe from the secondary air pump, or a leak in the manifold area.
