Best way to hard launch

Post by Spurian » Tue Dec 30, 2008 3:20 am

I am still not very good at doing really "hard" launches and I was wondering if you guys had helpful tips. So if you want to just peel off really fast without causing too much damage to your car, what is the best technique? I am not talking about drag racing but just a really fast launch. Right now, I give very little gas when hooking up first gear--I try to keep it at about 1200 RPM. Thanks

First of all, make sure ESP is completely off. If, when you want to launch a little harder, be careful that you simply don't press the accelerator harder but release the clutch at the same speed - its more likely that you will slip the clutch. If you smell something like brake lining after your launch, the clutch slipped excessively and got very hot - that's not good. But you don't have to dump or sidestep the clutch either. You also don't necessarily have to hold the engine at a certain RPM like they do at the drags. Just rev the engine so the tach is fluctuating between 3000-5000 (not holding it at any particular RPM) and let the clutch out very quickly. Then depress the accelerator quickly once the clutch pedal is completely out. The clutch won't slip, the tires may chirp and you're on your way to a quick launch without too much mechanical stress.
