The pins (brass so although softer not soft enough!) are well into the discs BEFORE the pads are low enough to illuminate the pad wear light - which is why i was so cross at getting a 1000 quid bill every time the pads wear to the factory prescribed wear point.
I really do think this is a design flaw - were it not for the fact that it was a company car when it first happened I would have taken them to task - as it was an enquiry via the Co. car team just elicited Audi's response that it was wear and tear. Now it's my car that's why i wanted to change pads to avoid getting trapped with another 1000 quid bill.
New pads and discs??!?!
Well, after a lot of perseverance I’ve had what I would call a result!
I initially started to see very early signs of the infamous ‘pad-pin’ damage about 2 months ago so took the car into my dealer for a check. As mentioned earlier on in this post the Tech came back saying the pads were only 50% worn and that a trapped stone was likely to be the cause of the light score to the one disc.
1.5 months later I had 3 faint scores on both front discs so took the car back again for a further check knowing exactly what the problem was. Again, the Tech came back saying the pads still had 45/50% wear left on them. At this point I raised my concerns that if I waited until they/the car warning light told me to change the pads I would need new discs as well. The response I had was I would need to pick the matter up with Audi UK so off I went…..
2 days after raising the issue with Audi UK I received a call back from ‘Customer Services’. The long and the short of it was my local dealer shouldn’t have sent me to them and if I was unhappy or worried I should go and pay for a new set of pads to be fitted!!!! As you can imagine that didn’t go down very well so after pointing it out several times off I went back to my local dealer….
Yesterday, my local dealer agreed to fit a new set of modified front brake pads free of charge. Fortunately, they have agreed to do this before any real damage has been done to the discs so I’m a happy boy. While the car is there I will try and establish what is different about the new pads though I somehow doubt they will know.
For those in a similar position - keep arguing. Ultimately it is crap design that causes damage to the disc so its Audi’s problem to fix…..

I may be off there very soon as I have ruts either side.
Mine's on longlife too. Most of my miles are around town. First service just done at 11kbn8959 wrote:Mine is on long life, 12k on the clock, 7k until service....

Interestingly, I was told I'd need new pads soon, Which I hope are covered by the maintenance plan I have..

Im thinking I should probably check the wear; and also change the oil too - but then again; if I service whenever Audi tell me to, and replace parts when it warns me so, then any other damage as a result of a design flaw it surely their problem to fix! If it wouldnt do 20,000 miles between service (well mine is looking like 19k when she tells me to service her), then they shouldve recalled it an reprogrammed the ecu to tell me to bring it in earlier...
