I have been a 997 turbo owner, and apart from the mega straight line performance,i am happier with my TTS than i was owning the Porsche.Im finding the Audi to be a joy, where the Porsche was a liability.I think there will always be a part of me that hankers after another 911 turbo, but if you can relinquish some of that Porsche performance,i think the RS4 will provide you with just as much excitement, and a lot more use.I took a road trip round Scotland when i had my 997 turbo, and i was so paranoid about leaving it anywhere, getting stone chips from other road users, and scraping the front lip spoiler getting on and off ferries, that i was glad to get home.I didnt even use much of all the performance either. That trip changed my perceptions somewhat, and im happier in a much cheaper car, that still has cracking performance.I say keep the RS4 and enjoy it,whilst enjoying a healthier bank balance as well.Hopefully the new RS4 will be a cracker, and you will still have change out of a 911 turbo, regards, SIMON.chemical-ali wrote:I originally got my RS4 due to my wife getting pregnant for the second time. I very begrudgingly cancelled my 997 GT3 order, realising retro fitting two child seats was just silly, and sold my then 996 turbo. I had to have a sensible family car, i.e. 4 door.
So, I did some research and came up with M5 or RS4. I realised I could never face the public in a BMW and plumped for the RS4. Since then (1.5 years ago) I have been continually amazed at how good the motor is, better in fact than the porsches in almost every way.
Recently, I have hankered for more power and with the kids being older and able to both fit in forward facing chairs I am thinking about a 997 turbo. However, reading the views and opinions on several chat forums, specifically piston heads, the average porsche owner seems to live in perpetual fear of depreciation and worry that thier motors going to fall to bit. In short, they are so negative. And its not just them - new M3 owners aren't much better.
In comparrison, you guys seem so chip about the motors. So it begs the question, are RS4 owners the happiest around?
Rs4 owners happiest around?

Porsche's have not only lost more, but I would propound more as a % of original price. For example: Carrera 2S 2005, originally £72,000 with moderate spec, now at 26k on the clock and 3 years old would be around £35k private, or 47% or original price, haveing lost £37kgilford wrote:chemical-ali wrote:Cheaper than a rear main seal and the savage depreciation porkers receive.
Hmmm, a bit of a harsh comment, especially as RS4's have taken a £10k hit over the past 6 months
Audi RS4 Saloon, 2005, originally £53,000 with moderate spec. With 26k on the clock and 3 years old, you should get, even at a dealers, £28k. Thats a 57% of original price.
Not harsh, fact. As for rear main seals, any change from £4k? And Porsche wont fully recognize the issue.
As a businessman, I see Porsche falling from the crest of their wave in the next few years as the flogging of the previous generations hard work in motorsports fades into distant memory and their modern legacy becomes one of a company with clever accountants. And you cant charge a premium for having a badge that means "we're good with numbers!"
I can't say Audi exite me as much as Ferrari or Buggatti, but they don't charge a premium for a badge, and so I don't loose so much money.
Did they make b7s in 2005?chemical-ali wrote:Porsche's have not only lost more, but I would propound more as a % of original price. Yeah, I'd echo 'Pig's comment. I though my Sti V5 was a good car, but on comparison my RS is a complete blend of performance, handling, quality and style. Its gonna be hard to beat when time to upgrade. Alex
