Airport parking

Post by Christiaan » Mon Sep 01, 2008 9:25 pm

I'm going away on holiday soon and need transportation to the airport.
In the past I have done the whole valet parking thing (free upgrade via bank) and taken either the wife's old car or prior to getting the RS4 my old shed of a second car.
Problem is now I have the RS4 the old shed has gone and the wife has recently got a luggage unfriendly TT roadster.
I see I have two options: a) Hand keys of my P&J to some valet parking chappie and hope he doesn't take it for an "extended" trip to the depot or b) just park it up at airport long stay and hope no harm comes to it while unsupervised.

Am I being too precious?

why can't you just get an airport mini cab there and back and leave the rs at home?

Yep, get a cab. Even with the state of the art security systems you'll know its been driven and how fast etc. but doesnt remove the fact its probably been driven hard.
With the current cost of petrol and the airport parking its actually cheaper for me to use a cab - and has been quicker on collection as im not waiting fo the valet company to bring it back, or a bus to get to long term parking.
Everyone is unique, just like you and me.

If you leave your p&j with them take the mileage and present it at reception and tell them you will check on return. Better still get alt transport. Had the misfortune at bristol airport of leaving my RB5 with them never again will do valet parking!

I wouldn't call it precious, sensible more like!

Like others have said, use an alternative like a cab or hire a car for the day of departure and then for the day of return.

Places like Europcar will pick up and drop off to airports and it may well work out cheaper than the long stay fees.

Oh great! I know a lot of you lot don't think much of Cabs and not real RS4's but come on pepes, they are not that bad that you can say to use these to go to the airport instead of using your precious saloon's and Avants.

When I went on holiday recently I felt my car would be safer in a secure compound than left outside the house for a fortnight.
I went to a place where you park your car and keep hold of the keys and they shuttle you to/from the airport. Will defo use them again in future.

Thank you all for making me feel like I am not being over sensitive.

The suggestion of asking a mate to drop me and the missus off sounds good in principle... unfortunatley most of them are single and still have impracticle 2 seaters.

I'm not too concerned about the safety of the car at home as it will be in a locked and alarmed garage.

A cab seems to be the only other option.... shame it is a 130 miles round trip.... time to get on the phone to some local taxi firms!

a) No way - Even if he/she doesn't put many miles on it, he/she will have some fun.

b) I parked my RS4 for 2 weeks at Heathrow Terminal 4 Business Long Term Parking in June with no problems at all. It was a joy to drive my RS4 home after two weeks in an American "wallow-mobile".

I did hear of a trader mate who drove to the airport for a 4 month trip in a old £50 trade in.

Left it in a short stay bay.

Not the most responsible, but maybe the airports would reduce the charges as a result?

I parked mine at Bristol for 2 weeks and I had to give them the keys which I wasn't too happy about. but I took pictures of the dash etc. and when I came back it had only moved a few feet from where I left it and had moved on .1 of a mile so was all good. Safe too.

I know it's hard but there will always be people who will leave even nicer cars. I saw plenty of cars I'd rather have than mine in the same car park. Try not to worry about it and just enjoy your holiday. plus like Dave says when you get back it's so nice to get in it!!
Current car..... hmmmmm????

JUst make sure they are a reputable high end firm who have their own parking and I do not see there being a problem. Never had any issues and have done it for yrs with Rs4, 997s, Rs6 etc.

Take it, will be fine. Believe me there are far more precious motors parked in the long term and business that I see most weeks!!!!
