considering RS4 next...
Hi,
I'm new to this forum but not to the RS4.
Currently i have a evo 7 pushing around 330bhp, i'm strongly thinking about getting a b7 rs4 but am doubtful in that its modifications are very limited.
Was thinking about the e92 M3 but RWD isn't really my thing.
Any comments to steer me onto the RS path or should i get the new evo x 360?
i'm only 21 at the moment so am extremely choosy about whats next...
Any comments/suggestions would be much appreciated.

RE: considering RS4 next...
The modifications are limited, and the weight of the car is much higher compared the Evo.
I just sold my Evo 8 MR RS, tweaked for track duty to 350 bhp, running Zeal coilovers (corner balanced), and Endless brakes. Full details at http://evolve.ae/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4910.
Coming from the Evo, the RS4 is far quieter and more palatable as a daily driver. It's not a slow car, and my housemate in his similarly-specced Evo 9 GT had to drive at 90% just to keep up with my RS4 (I was pulling from 3rd gear @ 3500 rpm). In the end, he managed to pass me but I did not wish to push it on a public highway even though there were no cars in the immediate vicinity. The RS4 pulls so effortlessly that it seems anticlimatic, unlike in an Evo where power feels more brutal and relentless.
The X and the RS4 are two different cars targeted at two different segments. As much as I love driving my Evo in its tuned state, it's not something I would drive 150 miles to a mountain pass in, not with the exhaust drone and the harsh ride, while the RS4 is surprisingly fast, chuckable without too much drama. RS4 brakes are also nothing short of impressive, though my only complaint coming from the Endless setup is that the brakes don't bite until they're halfway down

Go for the Evo X, the RS4 is for the older generation, your young so enjoy it, come kiddy time then convert to the RS4 because thats what it does well.dilz87 wrote:Hi,

To the OP: if you're still thinking of playing around with mods, and comfort is not a priority, the Evo is the way to go. Slap on a good BBK, get cams, fuel pump, boost controller, full 3" turboback exhaust system, valvesprings, retainers, headgasket, etc done up to 350bhp, slap on a set of 18x9s with 255-width semislicks, front and rear sway bars, full whiteline bushing kit, a good set of coilovers, a bucket seat for the driver with 4 point harness, and almost nothing out there under USD50k can touch you.
But daily comfort may be an issue for some, and that is where the RS4 comes in. I spend less time tinkering with my car and more time driving it, and long trips don't tire me out from the constant drone at 100 mph and firm suspension, and I can actually have a conversation with my passengers or enjoy some music en route to my destination. Some people will claim that the exhaust note is music in itself, but when an Evo is louder on the inside than from the outside, it starts to lose its appeal as a daily driver.
On track, I was pretty much untouchable in the Evo, but I'm getting way too old, and keeping the Evo and the RS4 would leave me torn as to which one to drive -- the Evo is great fun on the way to work, but after a long stressful day at work, the RS4 is a more pleasant car to be in

thanks so much for all your comments.
it is greatly appreciated.
yes,the evo is buckets of fun. cant disagree there but the RS4 has got just as much road presence.
i was going to get a 996 turbo but think that sort of car will be best left for later on in life. i know i'm getting a gallardo when i graduate.
i have a fantastic plate for my evo at the moment which is one of the reasons why i want another one along with its modding ability, but there's something in the back of my mind which still draws me to wanting an RS4.

You know what they say about itches.
I think Evo magazine once said that they RS4 is an Evo in an Armani suit. So it all boils down to how much money you want to spend.
Not to mention that the US Evo guys have been complaining about profiling by the police -- getting pulled over for the most stupid things, generally getting picked on. The RS4 is not a slow car, though I would recommend the Evo if you plan to take the car to track -- Evos are easier to tweak, cheaper to mod/run.
Given how you speak of getting a Gallardo when you graduate, or a 996 turbo before you do, I'd be inclined to believe that you're either pretty well-off or have fairly generous family, in which case, some people would argue that the Evo would be too rice for the driveway
Choosing between an Evo and an RS4 is like trying to decide between buying a belt to hold up your pants, or buying a nice branded one so it matches the rest of your outfit - function vs form + function

i know what you mean,i get pulled over all the time for spot checks. i was once pulled and was spoken to rudely, i took it to the duty commisioner and was given a verbal apology from the officer. felt alot better afterwards.

i want the RS4 but dont wan't to be held back in term's of modifying but i love it so much. a few mates of mine have got them in various editions (saloon, avant etc) and they really are a dream to drive!
It's the same debate between say an M3 CSL or the B7 RS4, many cars are more capable on a track but the RS4 was never designed to be a track weapon. Saying that, i've had many scalps in mine & alot of more worthy track metal, so as an all-rounder you'll find little better then the RS4.
I need to balance comfort, image, performance, fun, running costs & safety into a single vehicle & as above their are very few vehicles that can package this as well as the RS4 can.

csl and rs4, i dont think they are comparable! the rs4 any day of the week.why spend that sort of money on a csl where you dont any of the luxuries. eg - electric window,stereoW8PMC wrote:It's the same debate between say an M3 CSL or the B7 RS4, many cars are more capable on a track but the RS4 was never designed to be a track weapon. Passion, performance, rawness, perfection? I try not to like BMW's (call it my Audi nature) but I respect M3s and utterly respect CSLs...dilz87 wrote:csl and rs4, i dont think they are comparable! the rs4 any day of the week.why spend that sort of money on a csl where you dont any of the luxuries. eg - electric window, stereo
