I've got a PogoAlert (also made by Origin - who BTW are changing their name to Pogo) and it didn't make a sound when I went past the Talivan last week.

Neither did it alert me to the regular Talivan site on the A339 between Basingstoke and Alton - it seems that many Talivan sites are NOT on their database.

I think a laser detector is a must for Talivans - and they are going to become illegal (along with radar detectors) when the latest Road Traffic Act becomes law later this year - so we're stuffed!

There's two types of them:

1) 3 points, or the basic course - which it sounds like what you went on.

2) 6 points, or 3 points PLUS the naughty boys course - which is what I went on in 2003 (I was caught doing 77 in a 50 in my previous S4).

It's not based on the number of points you had - but how many the alleged offence is worth.

So anything above the ACPO guideline but less than 20mph over the limit = 3 points OR the basic course.

Anything above that but below the automatic ban territory = 6 points and a "chat" with a magistrate OR they offer you 3 points AND the "naughty boy" course.

What did I think of it? A total waste of time! We had a one hour lecture on how "speed kills" (so how come according to TRL speed is a factor in only 5% of accidents then?) followed by a one hour drive in a Suzuki Wagon R+. The "highlight" of this was the insistence of the "expert" that you MUST drive in 3rd gear in a 30mph limit - even when it was pointed out to him that all us "naughty boys"owned powerful cars that would be doing 60+mph before our eyes re-opened if we sneezed when doing 30mph in 3rd gear, so 5th or even 6th gear was safer!

Dave,

You must get a laser detector from Pogo, it sends out a very loud constant noise so you know when they are locked on to you, wrap it tightly with some polythene and stick it behind your radiator grille, who's going to see that.

Just make sure you check your rear view mirror as you slam the anchors on at 90mph !!

The radar detectors are not going to be illegal. You have it so it warns you when you are approaching a "Safety Camera" near a school, hospital, accident blackspot etc. so you know to drive with extra vigilance.

Contact Pogo they will confirm.
