new model rs4 diesel coming?

We'll oil be driving Corn burners before long!
Never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
I can understand both sides of the argument.
Big TD's are very good, and can be very very rapid. However, for me, one of the joys of coming back to Petrol was the engine noise when pushed.
Yes the diesel might be more economical, feel faster, even be faster, but without the aural delight of the petrol V8 it won't win me over (yet)

I love the thought of a powerful, torquey diesel RS4D but for one thing ... the restricted rev range. For me the great delight of a petrol RS4 is the 600rpm to 8250 rpm usable rev range, and the glorious noise the engine makes when taken over 6000rpm. Nobody is ever going to get a diesel that revs that high, so petrol will always win for me.
I just love the noise you get from the RS4 above 6500 rpm, it feels like it would rev all the way to 10,00rpm too if it weren't for the limiter. (I guess it might not last that long up there). That is something that you would never get from a diesel.
But the torque from a diesel sounds good too - may be I would need both and take whichever my mood was taking me.

The TDV8 range rover has a very nice sound when being pushed, granted its not in the same league as petrol V8's, but not far away.crispy wrote:I can understand both sides of the argument.

As pointed out modern oil burners offer good performance and economy at the same time. I can't imagine getting any enjoyment or involvement from a big torquey diesel. All that torques make for lazy driving and performance cars are about invovlement. The narrow torque band is so frustrating. For me there is nothing better than exiting a corner in second and taking the car to the redline. I puts a smile on my face everytime. A diesel would only provide a wry smile. Oh and the noise.
We should all be greatful that Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo, Maserati etc will continue to provide the true essence of a sports car.

I do not doubt the 635D has good performance but for me diesels are for lazy driving. Plug and Play type. A true sports car should include involvment and diesels due to their shorter power band and immense torque do not permitt such fun.
A remember a old TG programme that featured the 535D and 530i. The 535D was impressive and in certain aspects surpassed the petrol. But when they were raced around a track it was a forgone conlcusion. The petrol won by a considerable margin. There was also the TG feature of Clarkson taking the Jag diesel around the ring and his biggest complaint was how the power came in big dollops and it was over before it had began.

Again, more contradiction and piles ofRussianM3_dude wrote:Well, it's not often I take mine over 6000 anyways and the diesel will have a lot more shove where it counts. So maybe it's a good idea. Especially since the petrol sounds and responds like a diesel anyways.

Anyone who thinks a RS4 sounds like a diesel is clearly a looney! He has previously complained about having to rev the car too much to get it to perform so how is that like a Diesel? I've yet to see a Diesel (road car) rev to 8,500rpm.
RM3D, you are clearly devoid of any car knowledge whatsover
