Oil question

Post by markwm » Mon Jan 07, 2008 11:46 am

Oil is down in my 3500 mile car, previously I topped up with the spare Castrol SLX III in the boot which is now empty.

Obviously, I need to buy some more oild. My question is do I need to top up with the exact same oil? ie, SLX III or can I use any 5W 30 oil?

can use castrol edge sport 5W-30. No problems at all, I was reading it has same specs as the powerflow SLX 3.

Castrol powerflow SLX 3 (5W-30) is what I am using for topping up and it is the same spec as Audi's own Long Life III.

My local delaer said the edge oil is exactly the same as Castrol SLX III, only re-branded. That said it wouldn't be the first time they were wrong.

Is that Edge or Edge Sport?

Halfords only seem to stock 'edge' in 5w30

I've only used Castrol Edge 5W-30, bought in Halfords, in my RS4 (plus whatever the dealer used at the service).

My dealer seems to be using Mobil 1 but same grade 5W-30, I assume that's what they used last time car was serviced as I had a 'free' small bottle on the passenger seat

My car also came with Mobil 1 5W-30. I have Castrol in the shed from my S4, but bought more Mobil 1 anyway just to be safe.

This is now getting interesting as in Australia, the dealer told me the RS4 must be run with mineral oil such as Audi Longlife III or Castrol Edge/SLX and topped up with either the same or fully synthetic oil such as Mobil 1. Never to use fully synthetic oil complete in RS4 engine. Is there anyone here able to confirm what is fact and what is BS? Thanks.

Castrol Edge/SLX and Mobil 1 are both synthetic. The main reference point should be the VW spec for your particular car. There should be a spec for longlife and one for fixed-term. I believe the longlife-spec oils are engineered to resisit thinning. I believe the maximum term of two years for variable servicing is governed by the fact that oil degrades naturally and is past its best after two years.

They are not far off the mark. Castrol went through a rebranding excersize to become trendy again, the SLX name is still going but only now sold to the commercial makret, dealers etc. To the end user it is Castrol Edge 5w-40 that meets the VW504.00 spec.

You can get it in most places and from us including RS246 discount.

so the castrol slx professional powerflow ll3 is castrol edge 5w-40 >??
I had an oil change at the stealer and supplied my own oil.. I used edge 5w-30.,,... They said its not the VW spec oil, however in the audi manual they list VW 502 and 504. The VW 507 is for longer interval changes. I may be wrong.>>??
Now what comes into issue is potential warranty issues. I can't see that happening mind you, the car is looked after meticously and will be moved on in 3yrs for the R8?
Can you clarify if edge sport 5W-30 is Ok to use in the RS4, many rs246 members use it >??

Cheers

For the UK, Edge 5W-30 is ok and conforms with both fixed and variable service. prob best you contact audi customer services in Oz as due to different climate may be diff spec?

I supplied own oil - castro edge 5w-30. It is VW spec 502, 505 ; it is not 507 however. I will be changing my oil every 10000km mind you.
The cost of the slx prof. powerflow ll3 is prohibitive. I don't think it matters, for the type of driving I am doing. 10 km a day, during the working week.
If you raced it etc... then possibly choose the stealers oil.
Regarding warranty the car will be long gone before any issues.
