CD changer or Ipod?????

Post by rAudiguy » Mon Sep 24, 2007 7:27 pm

I have new B7 saloon that i pick up in 6 weeks time. the car has been fitted with a CD changer but my dealer has offered to fit the ipod conection in it's place free of charge. I'm now having 2nd thoughts as I didn't realise there wasn't a single cd slot behind the satnav. How good is the ipod conection? just wondering with 2 SD slots would i be better sticking a load of MP3's on them and being able to have 6 CD's too.

HELP..........your opinions would be appricated

cheers

Jim

Most people prefer the CD option, as the iPod connection is limited.
The iPod connection opens up in CD multichanger window in the sat nav and comes up as a list of 6 CDs.
"Slots" 1-5 are the first (by numeric sorting) 5 playlists you configure. These can be single albums or groups of albums. Once you select a CD, the playlist appears a track list numbered 1-99, with no track/artist description.
"Slot" 6 is the entire iPod library.

The SD slots are a lot better because they retain the track folder tree, so splits into artist, album, track, and it all named.

If you are going to use the SD slots, then I would probably just use the iPod on shuffle on and have it playing slot 6. Then you just get random tunes from the iPod, and you can always skip the tracks you don't like.

It is possible to have both now, as long as you dont have the TV option. I am having an interface fitted that allows full ipod control ( like an iPod ready Alpine) and keep my changer. Its a brand new interface but reportedly works fantastic using the TV button.

Jim - not only is the ipod interface crap IMO (see description above to draw your own conclusions) but you cannot use the single CD slot and dsatnav at the same time as the slot is needed for the DVD

I use two 4gb SD cards instead

Hi All

is it possible to wire the Ipod into an "AUX" - I would like to have my ipod in the armrest with audio being fed into aux input.

I have had my ipod interface fitted now, it runs in place of the TV (so only ok if you dont have tv tuner) It works fantastically, allowing easy access to all ipod controls / videos / songs etc. So if you have a video iPod you can watch the videos on the sat nav screen BUT and it is a really big BUt for me, it only works on Widows formatted iPods and being a mac user im stuffed!!!

The best interface I've seen though and if you use widows, Happy Days! (just not for me!)

Hi Simon, could you give me a bit more info please. Is it just a lead that you plug in or is there more to it, Also where does your ipod sit? Has it got its own holder etc? finally what was the cost of fitting. Thanks

On original question, stick with 2GB SD cards and CD changer, the OEM Audi i-Pod link is pretty limited IMO having used it in my old car and binned it within a matter of weeks. However Simon's solution does sound interesting.

And with 2 SD cards and CD changer you have access to approx. 70 albums, are you likely to need to listen to more than that? If so, carry another couple of SD cards and then you have over 140 albums that are properly accessible and listed.
