Smokey B7's

Post by EuroSag » Thu May 17, 2007 9:52 pm

I've read about a few B7 owners reporting a smoking problem from the exhausts, and today a friend of mine revved up the engine of his 8,000 mile RS4 and loads of smoke was coming out, kind of blackish a bit like diesel smoke. It looked like oil. His is a 2007 56 plate saloon.

Does anyone if there is some kind of common engine problem going on here?

As far as I know, my mates B7 hasn't been thrashed from cold or run low on oil, etc.

Any further info greatly appreciated.

I have heard of a few cars putting some black smoke out that back on heavy load. Before mine arrived had a play with one in my boss's AMG E55 and it kept putting some black somke out at full chatt. Maily before he changed gear.
Not noticed any from my car yet. But only have 1300 miles on its

Is another thread about this, I am waiting for reply from Audi tech regarding mine smoking out of one exhaust and not the other when cold. Mine does it at idle when started cold but at no other time. My previous E55 smoked on start up, was told that the supercharger weaped oil while engine was off and was quite normal, niether smoke once warm.

If its smoking on full chat, when gear changing I wouldn't be too concerned, many high poweered petrol cars are set to overfuel to provide combustion cooling and prevent the onset of detonation.

I had some sparks or something very hot and molten coming from my B7 this evening. Had a Mundano driver flash me and pull over to warn me. At a closer look NOTHING looks wrong. All levels are good, the exhaust looked OK. Any ideas?

I was at 110-125 changing from 4th to 5th, the engine wasn't straining at all.

I am worried. :?:

Yep, did see your other thread, but wasn't sure if you/anyone else had got any updates or not.

On this particular car, smoke was coming from both pipes albeit slightly more from the nearside (left bank). Another guy who I know was having a bit of a 'race' with an RS4 cab the other day and he told me that the cab was bellowing out smoke at full chat.

I can't say that I've ever had smoke coming from any car - except an old Renault 5 Gordini Turbo, and in that the smoke was coming from the dashboard - shortly before it burst into flames with an electrical fault :(

This happens to mine too, I first noticed it when I picked the car up, but put that down to the fact that it had been sitting around and had been in the workshop etc..

My car has sat in the garage all week as I fancied using the B5, when I started it last night, it filled the garage with blue smoke and is now using both exhausts. I had a conversation with service manager who is still waiting on a reply from Audi Uk technical, and have also now writen to Audi Customer Services so they have it on record. I have asked that they record the fault and that they confirm in writting, that in the event of Cat failure at any future time, these will be replaced at Audi's cost regardless of warrentee status, as quickest thing to kill cat converters is oil contamination.

This does not inspire too much confidence. I'm about to pick up my car next saturday and am now a little worried this might also be doing it.

Just to get this clear in my mind. There seem to be 2 types of smokey RS4s at the moment.

1. Blue smoke when car either stationary or travelling (any revs). Some with 1 exhaust more smokey than the other

2. Dark smoke when revved or during wide-open throttle

I have to say number 2 is much more reassuring although looks dodgy to the person following you. It is a common trait of high-powered turboed/NA and diesel cars.

Number 1 is much more worrying and I hope to god that RS4s are not developing some kind of engine issue. Simple1 thanks for chasing this up with audi...this is not something they will want to ignore or brush under the carpet.

I was told that the dark smoke was nothing to worry about as its just overfuelling when first started up and it's unburst fuel!!

i was thrashing my car on the weeking, rs4 b7 and there was a heap of black smoke coming out the exhuast, very unfortunat for the guy behind me trying to keep up, his car was white.

nothing to be worried about if the car is at full throttle and smoking

One question for you automotive 'techie' chaps: Would your typical MOT exhaust analyser be able to determine whether there is a problem with oil being burnt and plot it at various RPM and load conditions?
