Not good, not good. A puff of blue smoke is one thing. Filling the yard is quite another. I have 18K miles on my RS and nary a puff after the 1st 2K miles.

Interesting, this is my first post here so hi everyone. Bought a second hand B7 RS4 a few weeks ago with 19000kms on the clock and was an ex Audi Australia car so who knows whats happened to it.
I noticed the same issue with it on the weekend. Not heaps of smoke but enough to go what the F$%$ is that when cold. A small tap on the throttle and white smoke, no not the vapour kind. This has happened twice. I tried it this morning and nothing really, a little but more black smoke as youd expect from a cold car.

And the final thing is, its from the right hand side only. Will mention it to the dealer and get it checked but im guessing Ill hear the same thing, its normal.

Be very interested to see how you get along. Ill keep everyone posted also.

Spoke to the dealer this morning and service manager is talking to Audi UK tech dept to see what they suggest before taking the engine out and taking it to bits....... my car has less than half the mileage yours has, was carefully run in and not pushed until oil is warm... so cant be wear and tear unless something in the engine has let go. other issue that bothers me is that cats dont like oil, and in future if the cats fail I will be looking to Audi to replace them regardless that the warrentee has expired or not.

Does the exhaust system not have claps in it to reduce noise?

And so when idling/cold smoke only comes out of the one pipe as that is the only one open? Or does it actually have individual pipes per bank?

The RS4 has four outlet pipes - two on the LHS for the left bank and two on the RHS for the right bank. One pipe in each bank has a valve which can be closed to reduce noise.

Just to clarify, there are two seperate banks to the RS4 and each bank has ONE exhaust. The twin pipes at the rear and the valves are completely irrelevant.

Simple1, is it possible for you to get a short video of your problem, I would be interested to see how it compares to what I have occasionally seen. Mine didnt do it this morning.

Mine does it occasionally too, just on the right hand bank, although not often enough that I could replicate it for the benefit of showing the dealer. Also brings on the management light, so here's hoping that a fault will be logged, just struggling to find the time to get to the dealer

On another note, by S button is playing up. Sometimes sticks in one mode or the other and will not change. Anyone had this? Could just be a faulty button I guess

Crankcase breather? If it was plumbed in to one side of the inlet plenum then any heavy breathing might be seen from one exhaust only.

Sounds like Audi have got some work to do on this.
No Turbos=====No problem!
and it won't be a quick turbo swap!

Me thinks its the cats!

Time to remove them!

Still no problems, without the turbos, just a little slower than the others, with the turbos.

I am starting a new club, Non Turbos Anon. Any takers?

I followed a B7 a few months ago on a private test facility who thought he could outrun a sad old B5 S4. In the attempt a fair number of molten bits of metal where coming out of the exhaust. This was probable full throttle in 4th or 5th gear.

His attempt to put me off didn't help however and I was able to ease past going up hill....he didn't look very happy, just as well he couldn't see the molten metal out of the the exhaust! This was on a private test facility near Tonbridge Audi.
