The ECU has been programmed to run on 98 Ron fuel or lower (the timing adjusts as required). If you fill up with fuel of a higher octane rating the ECU will only adjust the timing to its factory set max (which is 98 Ron). The result is you will not notice any power increases over and above the 98 Ron (although people swear they do, this is just wishful thinking).VARSITY wrote:Teutonic_Tamer wrote:Unless you have had a re-map, specifically for 102 RON, then you wont actually gain any benefit from using BP 102.Andyuk911 wrote:I sometime use BP102(£2.42 1l)
BP Ultimate is 97 RON, not 98. Futhermore, BP Ultimate has been proven, in two independent tests, to be worse than Tesco 99 (which is also the official fuel of the British Rally Championship) and also the now obsolete Shell Optimax (98 RON).Andyuk911 wrote:Additionally, Shell V-power (99 octane) and BP ultimate(98 octane) have cleaning agents ... I have seen an Audi A8 run one bank normal and the other BP Ultimate and the difference was amazing.
BTW, I started with about 24mpg, whilst running it in. But as I open her up, it's starting to drop - about 18mpg ATM.![]()
Now I am confused?
I thought we were supposed to run these on the best fuel we could, but I read your comments as this is not the case?
Please put this into plain english, for me at least.
Thanks
Example;- If i fill my 996 TT with Sunoco GT Plus which is 109 Ron Fuel and run the car/ECU in std mode i dont notice any power increase over the std 98 Ron. However once i set the ECU to run the 109 Ron the timing advances and i have more power. The only difference you will notice is cost. 109 Ron £ 3.00 ltr, 98 Ron £0.98 ltr.

Running on cruise drinks more fuel if the car is travelling on say hilly areas as you can make your throttle adjustments smoother with your own foot. The cruise also wants to keep you at the set speed so any incline will result in more throttle being applied where in reality when driving manually you may let the car slow slightly, Clarkson proved this on an A8 deisel when he drove to outer mongoliar and back on one tank of fuel.audijohn wrote:Just the oposite buddy.Tartan_Rob wrote:I have not found the way to drive properly yet to get consistant fuel readings. I am sure though that running on cruise is heavier on fuel, I had the same experience in the previous 2 S4's.

I'll concede on hilly ground

I am expecting high 20's on the motorway as you are getting.

I managed 25mpg from my first tank which was a healthy mixture of motorway, town driving and some "exploring" of the car's abilities. This was on half BP ultimate and half a tank of whatever the dealer had put in. I only usually use V-power but couldn't find a shell station, so I'm sure it will improve from now on.
