Good/Bad time to buy a B7 Saloon?

Post by markwm » Wed Feb 28, 2007 8:20 pm

I'm looking to get a new car within the next couple months. Always wanted a B7 RS4 but I'm thinking I'm a year too late. Used prices are still sky high and the B8 A4 platform isn't that far off.

Also, the S5 looks looks tempting and I'm guessing it will come in just over £40k.

My question is, can you actually still order new RS4's? and what is the general opinion about dealers used prices atm??

I'm still waiting a little longer for an RS4 as I think they are overpriced for what they are (over a B7 S4) at the moment. Prices are coming down nicely however and there are lots of RS4s on offer on autotrader/PH etc. The lowest RHD one a few days ago was £43,500 but without the satnav/TV tech pack...and you can negotiate prices down on second hand cars at dealers if you have the cash ready.

With the 07 plates from tomorrow and the imminent arrival of the new E92 M3 the prices will continue dropping. I think a 55 or 06 RS4 with just under 20k miles will be worth 35-40k by the end of the year. Thereafter prices will likely plateau and hold better.

The S5 looks stunning but it will be a while before an RS version appears.

IF a B8 RS4 appears it won't be for several years, since RS models only appear towards the end of a model's life.

I say IF because there never was a B6 RS4, so it's not guaranteed that there will be an RS version of every model.

I currently have my 06 plate B7 RS4 saloon for sale and used values have not held up well at all compared to other cars I have owned. Its in Autotrader at £47.5k but I would accept £46k as my new car is on its way in a couple of weeks. Thats an £8k drop in 9 months and 10000 miles! I do think things will level out, a lot of early owners are now changing so there are loads on the market right now.

Mine could be up for sale very soon, too. Only just over 2000 miles, registered in December. I can be a little more flexible on price than you might expect. Again, a new purchase is hastening its departure.

Well I've got a 997 GT3 coming which means I simply won't have room in the garage for the RS4, and let's face it, it would be a bit OTT to keep both. So I'm looking at downsizing it to an S3.

Nice!

I take it you have some rolling finance arrangement where you can change cars easily? given you've only had the RS4 since december. How much have you lost?

They're not on finance - and my situation is a little unusual in that I didn't buy at the full list price. I'm therefore hoping that I won't actually have 'lost' anything... :)

OK, you now have my interest too. How did you manage that? You wouldn't be a well known celebrity who gets a slightly larger "goodie" bag than most, would you?

LOL, no. On certain new car purchases, I don't pay any VAT.

So would anyone still consider ordering a ordering new one? according my dealer you can get full DVD sat nav with £500 with all A4's including the RS4, that does make it slightly more attractive.

Yep - got one on order with no regrets (and with cheap Sat Nav)

It's not the value of the depreciation that matters, but the value of the fun...
