RS4 Avant and wife

Post by Wheep0 » Mon Oct 23, 2006 10:37 am

Hi,
Seriously considering an RS4 avant and a 335 i M sport touring and am in negotaitions with both Audi and Bm dealers.to trade in early November for vehicles that are unregistered ( If you look you can find, have to drive but so what) Currently have a 6 month 3.0 TDI avant quattro and love the car. I just want to live a little and have been so impressed with the RS4 and now the Avant is here. why not...
Due to me working overseas at a month at a time ( trying to produce more of the stuff that the RS4 needs loads of) We are a 1 car family.
Wife is rather small at all of 5ft 1" in her socks and as much as I would love to buy this vehicle, I am concerned it may be overpowering for her.
We also have a 7 month old baby and 2 young girls and need a car that can do the family thing as well as a blast down one of the many B roads in my part of Scotland.
I have risen up through the impreza ,evo ranks and know how to drive a car -touch wood.
Do any of you guys on here have a wife or partner who drives the Car and is it easy to use as a daily vehicle on the school / shopping run. kerbing issues are another thing of course , but will negotiate a house keeping reduction for every mark
My Head says BMW but my heart is crying out for the Avant RS4..
Of course could get the wife a micra!

Wheepo, I've have an RS4 Avant and my wife uses it regularly. It's very easy to drive sedately (if you wish) and it is very comfortable to use for the school run & shopping trips etc. (you just get there & back that bit quicker!!!!!). My little boy is 4 and he loves it too. We regularly have 2 or 3 kids in the back, plus on trips to the beach at weekends the boot easily swallows all the wet suits and beach toys etc that you need.

Get the RS4 and you won't regret it!!!

Being practical here, its going to cost you £30k to change. For that you could get a stonking 2nd car. For example you could get an S4 in saloon, avant or cab bodies for that 2nd hand or for only £35k you could get a hardly used BMW Z4M Roadster. I personally wouldn't take the big hit on the diesel (which is a great car) and I would use the £30k to buy something additional.

PS I would not want my wife driving a 335i as a daily driver (and only car) in a Scottish winter.
Maserati GranTurismo GTS Auto, S3 Sportback, TT2 3.2 Roadster, Disco3 for the heavy stuff.

Above Point is something that is very much on mind.. Icy Febuary evening on our local roads, 306 bhp at the rear wheels , wife driving and the kids in the car doesnt bare thinking about.....decision wil be made this evening.. My heart is already set on the RS4 avant but just dont know if I can convince the little woman...... As far as taking the hit on 3.0 tdi sline avant.. I know its hard.. Been offered £ 26k (with much haggling, 23k was first offer) on it on a new RS4 avant . Paid £ 32K 6 months ago....Not good but thats the Market..
With me away working for a month at a time and the wife a mum and housewife, 2 cars just do not seem practical....
Both excellent cars from excellent Marques, one however is just very special in my reckoning...

Wheep0 i'm in Aberdeenshire ans i would agree about the BMW in the winter i had 2 years ago and both toltaly useless in the wet and pointless to start in the snow hopless so i would say quattro all the way.
i have the B5 RS4 and the wife is around 5'2" and she loves driving it when she get the chance which is not often and i would say the B5 has a heavy'r clutch than the B7 so should not be a issue for the wife to drive she also finds it easyer to park than her vectra

Don't have the sports seats in the RS4, get the recaros (although I haven't seen them in a car and the same problem may apply). The sports seats are so big and buckety the passenger seat has to be quite forward to accommodate a child in a child seat behind it, without their legs being bent up against the seat.

Also its nigh on impossible to turn round in the sports seats to hand/take anything from the kids in the back. On a trip to Cornwall this year, I was at the sharp end of my wife's displeasure with, and I quote, "these f*cking stupid seats" whilst trying the attend to the needs of our 2 year old in the back. I hasten to add that this was not in earshot of our son who clearly would be repeating this at every conceivable inappropriate moment.
RS4 Straight out the box - gone :-(

This is soon to be our only car and the wife has used it with no trouble.

All the major controls are very light, servotronic steering, clutch etc.

I was looking at the 335d/i Touring before I made a proper decision :D

By the time it had a good spec it was over £40k

My Mrs drove my old RS4 all the time with no issues, and that was faster than the new one

Cheers

Ben

Hi Wheep0,

Sorry I can't give you any real life advice on a B7 as I've never driven one. The question that you asked did amuse me though, you are on RS246 and I therefore trust that you're not after any unbiased, impartial advice on this matter.

Having said that, I can say for definite that you should go for the RS4, it's clearly the better car and the one for you!

Much better. Had I had the choice (mine was a cancelled order) I would definitley have plumped for those. Not sure how long the would stay that colour though with muddy shoes, sticky fingers and enough crumbs to sink ships. Oh how your life changes!! :(
