Long life oil?

Post by RS4Stan » Thu Sep 21, 2006 5:43 pm

I am going to change my longlife oil for Mobil1 0W40 and a new filter this weekend. Does anyone have an opinion on the standard long life oil?
Am I correct in saying that the only reason that it's used is to help the car get to around 18,000 miles without a service?
I have always used Mobil1 in my previous cars.

I had Castrol Longlife II (now replaced by Castrol Edge 5W/30) in my S4 and that was still in good condition when I had the first AVS service done at 17,000 miles. So I've got no negative comments to make on the standard longlife oil. Any oil that meets the relevant VW spec (506 00 IIRC) should be fine.

I also used to use only Mobil 1, but I'm happy to use any fully synthetic oil that meets or exceds VW's spec.

The long life oils will go the distance, that why they cost so much :)

My dealer gave me a litre of top up oil when i bought my new rs4 avant. The oil is Shell Helix Ultra VX (5W-30) It is approved against VW 504.00, VW 507.00. Is this the right oil for topping up in the B7 RS4?

The RS4 handbook says that only oil that meets VW spec 504 00 should be used if you are on AVS - if it says meets VW 504 00 on the bottle then it's OK.

If you're not on AVS the handbook says you can use oil that meets either VW 502 00 or 504 00.

Mobil 1 ESP

I believe that Mobil 1 ESP 5W/30 is the Mobil 1 which complies with the Audi 504 000 standard.

The likes of Edge 5w-30, Mobil1 ESP 5w-30 and Fuchs GT1 5w-30 meet the longlife requirements of VAG. If you are servicing 12months/12000 miles than you do not need to use these oils, the likes of VW503.01 for cars over 180bhp can be used.

You'll find many VW approved oils on my website with their respective specs, this should guide you in the right direction.

The RS4 Handbook clearly states that even for Fixed service intervals oil that meets either VW 502 00 or VW 504 00 MUST be used, and that for LongLife Service ONLY oil that meets VW 504 00 must be used.

The RS4 engine places more load on it's oils that most other VW engines over 180bhp - how many of them have a redline at 8250rpm? Remember forces go up with the square of engine speed, so that's 4 times the forces in most diesel engines and double the force of most other petrol engines.
