Tow Bar!

Post by fredfunk1975 » Tue Aug 15, 2006 11:51 am

Iam after some advice please.

I contacted Audi last week about getting a tow bar fitted to the avant, but they stated that there is not one for the RS4 and if i had one fitted and something went wrong with the car whilst towing a trailer it would invalidate my warranty!!!

All i want to do is occasionaly tow a small motorbike trailer with my classic motorbike on, i would say that the maximum distance of anyone trip would be about 100 mile.

What should i do? Take a chance and get one from an independant supplier or do what audi says?

PS The car and trailer would be going well within the national speed limits!

Maybe you should ride the motorbike, saves any hassle :bigblink:

i do ride it! :D
But it is a 1959 BSA and things do go wrong (much like audi's of present day!). I go to the Isle of Man for example i will transport the bike over there on a trailer and only ride it once iam there. If the bike brakes down when out on a run i can always go and pick the car and trailer up!

how do Lee.

Have a look in the yellow pages for your area, i have been quoted between £350 and £415 for a detachable tow bar fitted (electrics included).

Its exactly the same for RS6... A few people have had a tow bar fitted though, but you can imagine why Audi are concerned that some muppet trys to put 400bhp+ through the beast at the lights whilst towing a considerable load.

It would be much better if they provided guidance on a maximum "light" load and conservative driving style as you describe above. I think that Edcase wanted a tow bar for nothing more than a bike rack; thats a no-brainer to me that that should be OK. In this age of electronic wizardry they could put a big-brother load sensor on to differentiate from those that chose to break some more reasonable rules perhaps??

I agree. I'd like to do something like this but am wary of the warranty implications.

I definitely think this is possible.

I'd be interested in the Audi part numbers as well.

I was also told that I couldn't tow with my S4 - However, privately the dealer admitted it was 'probably OK' as long as it wasn't a 'long-term' thing.

I have a race car trailer that I've always wanted to tow, and a car (my forthcoming RS4 Avant) with lots of torque and over 400BHP would seem to be ideal. However, I think Audi's viewpoint is that the engine is too 'highly tuned' and peaky to make a good towcar, not to mention the clutch's ability to cope.

Having said that, I have seen at least 2 S4 Avants at race circuits with tow bars, quite happily towing trailers with race cars.

Yes, the S4 enigne is a bit less 'hot', but not by that much.

I’ve also been looking to fit a tow bar to my Avant with no luck.

The problem I’m finding is no one will fit one as the car has not been “homologated” by Audi, to have one fitted. I’ve talked to a couple of firms and they don’t seemed to want to know as soon as they find this out. I’m thinking of buying one myself and trying to fit it. If anyone finds someone that with fit a detachable bar please let me know.
