Dont really want to lay down the cash before having a good drive in one.

If my local dealers attitude to test drives is anything liek the norm then anything more than 45 minutes in one is a privilege!
As for hiring one I would use good old google. usually a couple of luxury hire firms out there that'll have M3s and RS4s. Issue usually is that it would be cheaper to pay the financing on one for the day than the deposit and hire charge.
